Paradigms are shifting and new practical solutions are needed. This year we want to start an Open Source Ecology community in Germany and we are looking for a Dedicated Team to make this happen.

The people involved in the project will be sharing openly and for free economically significant information. We want to open source the ecology of the environmental, societal and technological systems so that we contribute directly to the creation of an open source economy – an economy that optimizes both production and distribution, while providing environmental regeneration and social justice.

We start with the technology needed for the creation of a small scale civilization with modern comforts – the Global Village Construction Set and other relevant tools. From tractors, wind turbines to cars. Every technology will be developed with values like modularity, simplicity, lifetime design, low-cost, closed loop manufacturing, Do-It-Yourself, flexible fabrication and high performance. We want to open source the whole lifecycle of each technology – from its parts sourcing, fabrication, use, maintain and repair to its reuse and recycle. We will open source also our ecological food production, housing, workshop constructions and business models – our complete economy. All this economically signicant information will be saved digitally on the Internet as text, manufacturing files, pictures and videos so that we distribute it not only to our current generation, but to all other future generations on Earth – who can use it and build upon it! We are looking for the pioneers to join us in this endeavor! You can help us full-time, part-time or however you can. Let’s connect and learn about each other.
Why Germany? The people in Germany can and will play a vital role in the OSE development in Europe and the world. In Germany there are very good engineers, most people are well financially and here is one of the best sustainability and open source cultures in the world. It is a perfect place to start an OSE community.

Our first main goal is to establish the initial Development Team dedicated to create the community in 2012. The Development Team is open to everyone who works on the creation of the community and has a specific group of people, the Core Team, who will start up and develop the community no matter where or how. We would need help with all areas of community creation and development: organization, communication, land search, ecological housing and workshop architecture and construction, fabrication, engineering, mechatronics, permaculture, demeter, farming, business, law, social, financial etc.

WHY are you motivated to support/develop this work?
*Do you endorse open source culture?
Of course, what a question. The future is open and free.

*Why are you interested in collaborating with us?
We have started a project called planraum in Regensburg. This Project is a very widely defined project to unify ecologic ideas, arts and technology. In the first part by creating a physical room like a hackerspace to create a melting pot where the ideas can spawn. As second part there is the subproject wurzelwerk and the associated Farm where a technology based community will try to reform the rural economics. This project is very in the beginning, but as there is plenty of land and some buildings availabe it could emerge to something like a factor e farm in Germany. The project is in the very beginning and the planned arrival of people in this place is in 2012 or 2013. Yeah, and we're interessted in contributing to the mill-drill-lathe as we have some people experienced on this topic in our group. So actually I am interessted in collaborating as you share my visions, perhaps you would say, I share your vision. However, OSE rocks.

*How do you think that the GVCS can address pressing world issues?

There is this idea, that societies fail due to there complexity. Complexity
in the sense of always larger specialisation of individuals in the society
as well as further vertical differentiation (Tainter summary in German:
http://uharc.net/wiki/collapse ) leads to an always lower net benefit when
introducing more complexity to the system. This leads to loads of social
difficulties, problems and if not cured perhaps to collapse. I do not
believe that there exists the immediate chance for collapse in the western
world, but we have to reduce complexity by keeping the benefits whereever
we can. And there enters relocalisation and redistribution of the means of
production the stage (and with this OSE), as it is one of the most natural
and best proven ideas to create resilient communities with low complexity
and high output. If OSE is used as foundation for this thinking we can
overcome loads of the present day problems in the world, in the developed as
well as in the developing world

*What should happen so that you become more involved with the project?
I think nothing. At the moment other projects are developing, and sooner or later I will grow in the shoes which are made for me, but don't fit yet.

*What are you missing in the project?
Perhaps I haven't found it yet, but while building up new means of production there also should be an social scientific assessment of the whole project to get an idea of the real impact of local production.
More social scientific assessment perhaps, as there lie also big dangers in
widespread means of total production (of course the current system has also
large dangers). But perhaps this dangers should be reviewed.
More women, as I think a solely male community is quite unhealthy
*What are your suggestions for improvement of the project?
see above.

WHAT
*List all of your skills in these areas: Communications - Organizational - Computer Support - Finances - Design - Natural Building - Electronics - Automation - Metallurgy - Engineering - Fabrication - Agriculture - Energy - Architecture - Video/Graphics/Art - PR/Marketing - Education - Construction - Industry - CNC - Chemistry - Product Design - Other
Organizational/Communications: Worked in political as well as non political student organisations in leading positions, organized some conferences and established a festival
Agriculture/Permaculture: Grew up on a small industrial Farm. Having my own permaculture project running.
Education: worked with difficult children, held some lectures on Computer Scientific and Mathematical Topics.
Mathematics: Studied it, actually still studying it
Unix System Administration, Programming etc.: Doing it all the time

*How have you already contributed to the project?
Propaganda. And yes, more Propaganda.

HOW can you help?
*How are you interested in contributing to the work of GVCS development?

Very much I'm interested in creating a OSE fabrication and research site somewhere in middle Europe, as well as building up a team of professionals. As I am associated with a university of applied sciences I also want to distribute some the the design and research to bachelor as well as master students in the areas of computer sciences, mechanical engineering as well as electrical engineering.
I'm very interested in bioplastics and we are developing a method to gain Polyactid Acid.

*Can you volunteer to work with us, and if so, how many hours per week?
Of course, it depends on the work. I'm volunteering all the time I'm not working.

*Are you interested in working with us for pay? If so, what services can you offer, and what is your hourly or per-project rate?
huh? how that? I think yes...

*Are you interested in Dedicated Project Visit?
No, not at the moment.

*Are you interested in purchasing equipment from us to help bootstrap development?
I think we can build everything on our own.

*Are you interested in bidding for consulting/design/prototyping work?
Not as long I'm involved in so much other projects.

*Are you a True Fan? If not, why not?
Yes

*Would you like to see yourself working with us on a full-time basis?
When I can make a live of it.

*Are you interested in using the technologies that we are developing directly?
Of course. I want to have them all

*Are you interested in being part of the world's first, open source, resilient community? The GVCS is the preparatory step for the OSE Village Experiment - a 2 year, immersion experiment (2013-2014) for testing whether a real, thriving, modern-day prototype community of 200 people can be built on 200 acres using local resources and open access to information? We are looking for approximately 200 people to fill a diverse array of roles, according to the Social Contract that is being developed. This may be the boldest social experiment on earth - a pioneering community whose goal is to extend the index of possibilities regarding harmonious existence of humans, ecology, and technology - as a beacon of light to benefit of all people on Earth.
Yes I am interested, but there's loads to do in the old world

Idea
The overall Information in each thread isn't very high normally, but it is hell of a mess to work through all the Mails of one thread again to collect the relevant information. Thus the idea of the Information Log ist ot provide a summary of a thread in the mailinglist or the forum (as soon as it runs).

|}

Best Practises
We would love You to contribute. As the Log should be something like the entry point to the information discussed in the thread of the mailinglist, it should summarize everything that was said, but also refer to wider information through linking to external resources as well as internal resources. Thus the main points to collect are:

* Essential Information and results of discussions including references to the mail number in the Google Groups Tree View of the most important Mails that contained key insights.
* Reference to Wiki Pages on which changes were made by the users after the discussion
* References to external Resources that where mentioned in the Thread and are of relevance
* References to other Mailing List Threads that discussed a similar topic.
* You may use THIS as a template for the summary (click on 'edit' and copy-paste the content to Your page)

Meeting #1 2010-11-04
Communication Log
Andreas, Jalil and Jamie met in Teamspeak to discuss the further work of the Group.

Andreas presented the ideas on the Communication Log and how to use it further. It should be single point of entrance for people who are reading the Mailing List, but are not so familiar with the Wiki. The Communication Log will contain a summary on the important insight from the Mail discussion, further all the Information that is written down there is linked to the Mails in the Google Groups view, so that it is easy for everybode to pick out the most important Mails of this thread that might contain more detailed information than that in the summary.

Further the summary of the log should contain links to all the wiki pages to which information was added in the course of the discussion. Additionally internal and external ressources should be referenced. The goal is, that the reader starts at the summary of the thread and gets more and more information when following the links in the thread. Also similar threads should be linked.

Tasks
* Writing a best practice method how to write the summaries (Andreas, Jalil)
* Summarizing the Threads depending on the significance of the discussed topics (Andreas, Jalil and Jamie)

Engaging People in Wiki Work
More information that is passed in the Mailing List should be put on the wiki for easier access and better sorting. For this the workgroup will send the relevant pages to put information down to the Mailing List when there is information worth documenting.

The people should be engaed to use the wiki more. For this purpose important information like minutes of meetings, tutorials how to use it and best practice methods to collect information are to be written down.

A resources page on which interesting external information is collected has to be created. More pictures should be in the wiki to attract more people to use it.

Startdate: 2010-10-25

Summary
Funding Issues
The Solar Fire project by Eerik and Eva Wissenz was in trouble to find monies that they might have to sell exclusive production licenses to continue keeping the project open source (Message 1). During the course of discussion Erik pointed out that he will need about 5000 Euro to finish documentation and start a kickstarter or crowdfunder project (Message 20). In the following the money was raised by contributors within the OSE Europe list. The possibility to donate the money to the OSE Foundation to get tax reductions was raised, concerns about the legality in case of reapying of the funds to the contributors as well as Charter Problems have stopped further discussion. The money goes straight to Eerik and Evas SiSustainable Project as indicated by the proforma invoices (Message 72). Eeriks also sent out Risk Prospects and an Investment Plan (Message 81) for the contributors.

Further Funding: It was also suggested, that Eerik spends the money on other projects related to Millares (Message 66), but this was abandoned as the contributors want to decide themselves where the money goes and decided to take a different approach for funding Millares as soon as there are more concrete steps. On the other hand Eerik wants to try to get Millares as an training center for SolarFire, the money raised with this project will be repaid to the contributors and they could refinance as they liked there (Message 69)

Licensing: The Question about the Licensing was raised (Message 82). As a license on Open Source Hardwar only makes sense if there is a good documentation available the documentation should be licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA. In Message 83 also all the different production types (DIY, Local Production, Mass Production) are explained. Further steps to continue in Open Sourcing the stuff are considered.
Erik also considered to change the license to a commercial one (Message 102) on some time. It was further mentioned, that this might get tricky, as every bit of contribution has to be tracked from the people when the license should be changed afterwards, as it is share alike (Message 105).

Technical Issues
Reverse Engineering: It would be possible to Reverse Engineer SolarFire if it is not possible to keep it OpenSource also Will mentioned before that the DIY Version will despite the selling of the mass product versions (see Message 83) would stay open source. Also this method would not be vere effective when taking in account the work already done by SiSustainable.

Tracking System:
SolarFlower has a Tracking System working with purely mechanical means. This could be adapted to the SolarFire System (Message 55,70) but would have a much shorter range.

The overall Information in each thread isn't very high normally, but it is hell of a mess to work through all the Mails of one thread again to collect the relevant information. Thus the idea of the Information Log ist ot provide a summary of a thread in the mailinglist or the forum (as soon as it runs).

The Log should be something like the entry point to the information disussed in the thread of the mailinglist. Itself focuses on everything that was said, but also refers to wider information through linking on external ressources as well as internal ressources. Thus the main points to collect are
* Essential Information and results of discussions including references to the mail number in the Google Groups Tree View of the most important Mails that contained key insights.

The money goes straight to Eerik and Evas Project as indicated by the proforma invoices (Message 72).

On the other hand Eerik wants to try to get Millares as an training center for SolarFire, the money raised with this project will be repaid to the contributors and they could refinance as they liked there (Message ??)

Licensing: The Question about the Licensing was raised (Message 82). As a license on Open Source Hardwar only makes sense if there is a good documentation available the documentation should be licensed under . In Message 83 also all the different production types (DIY, Local Production, Mass Production) are explained. Further steps to continue in Open Sourcing the stuff are considered. -- to be continued as not yet settled

Gemeinwesens an.

since 2009 establishing planraum in Regensburg: OpenSpace, including Hackerspace, ecological topics as well as
artist works

Andig: University collaborations

We want to get people interested in OSE and also connect with people who are interested in OSE and the GVCS. Here is a list of the outreach.

Universities
University Collaboration (this holds true for some universities right now, and is far from complete as the educational systems are varying very strongly from university to university and the legal and organisatorial constrains are all take from Germany)

Bachelor/Master/PhD Thesis
Master/PhD Thesises are more interesting, as the time to finish them is not so short as in the Bachelor thesis. So you could expect a student working for half a year to a year (depending on the university and the enthusiasm of the student) on a particular project.
* Preliminaries: Database of possible topics for thesises. There should be some algorithm to get suitable thesises out of the System Engineering of the OSE projects, or the managers of the projects make a list of possible thesises to offer them to the university students. The thesises may be theoretical as well as theoretical/practical, projects with the focus on practical work are better suitet for internships)
* Cooperation with a professor at the respective university, as the thesises have to be assisted there.
* Contract with the student that they release there work under some Creative Commons License (legally should this be no problem as a thesis is always under the copyright of the author, also it is 'done for the university')
* Assistance through the OSE Manager/Contributors, working on the subject that is topic of the thesis

Internships
For example at the 'Universities for Applied Sciences' in Germany every student has to do a 18 Week internship in some Corporation, Research Facility etc.
People who are doing there internship could come to a OSE building facility to build some Prototype OR the workshop of the university (they tend to be quite cool and FabLabig) could be used to produce a Prototype.

Competitions
There are many different scholarly engineering competitions among students, like the Robot Football Cup, the Formula Student and many others. Perhaps OSE-E and also OSE Worldwide could make some kind of 'competition' where the students try to build the best prototype for one machine. As OSE proposes collaboration one has to regulate the Opening of the Sources. But as students really have fun to compare their skill to these of others I think it would be no problem to keep the plans secret until the Presentation of the Products. Measurement Scheme for the winner would be all the OSE standards and how good they are conversed.

Andig: some additions to the open source permaculture software that unfortunately does not yet exist

Proposal: I would like to see a piece of open-source software that helps with permaculture design. It would be an expert system doing the work of a permaculture designer, for free.

Maybe something like this already exists and I don't know about it. If you know of such software, please add a link to this page.

A fairly simple, but very helpful, algorithm would go something like this:
#You input things you want to grow. This could be specific plants (e.g. 'Little Gem lettuce'), or broad categories (e.g. hard timber, grains)
#You input climate information. Or better yet, you input your location and the software finds climate information online.
#The software accesses a database of organisms (possibly derived from Plants For A Future). It knows the inputs and outputs of each organism and matches them up; where one element can work in synergy with another, it points that out to the user and suggests they be planted near each other. (e.g. Fruit trees need rotting matter, strawberries produce that when they die, so plant your strawberries near your fruit trees.) Where none of the elements you listed cover the needs (e.g. you want fish, but have no food source for them), it suggests an element that could fill the need and is appropriate to your climate.
#It should also be able to access a database of pests and weeds and suggest ways of dealing with them. (e.g. If you grow cabbages, it would suggest chickens to eat the slugs. If you grow vegetables, it would suggest spearmint to repel insects.) There are databases online that could be mined for this information (like Biorationals); see the links at biological pest control.

Additions: I think the above is a good start, but to get a really accurate modeling of a permaculture patch one has perhaps to do some more magic. So the Software should additionally
#be able to cope with micro climate measurement to find suitable niches for plants on the area (the overall climate is of course important, but the affections of micro climate are often overwhelming). The micro climate could be collected through something like an micro climate measure stick, getting information on wind, radiation, moisture, soil moisture, soil temperature as well as temperatures in different heights.
# have access to a database of predefined permaculture patterns (like a potato-tower with a squash upon it and surrounded by some legumes growing up the tower but with the plants outside the tower so that the potatoes and legumes do not interfere) and characteristics for the zone in which it grows good, animal impact an plant impact for the whole pattern. In the above example you would get an error when you want to put potatoes also on the ground next to this pattern, as legumes and potatoes don't grow good next to each other etc. This database should be open with an good interface t collect best practice approaches. To have patterns simplifies also the computational effort of checking if the plants match to each other. Especially as there are so many parameters, that PFAF won't cover all of them
#take the temporal evolution of the system in account. e.g. to suppose planting different herbs under trees in the first years and make suggestions for the development of the patch when the trees, shrubs etc. get mature.

since 2009 establishing planraum in Regensburg: OpenSpace, including Hackerspace, ecological topics as well as
artist works

No, I am not. If you don't have much money and have loads of own projects there's always much month left when the money is over...

Idea on Sharing the Vision
The vision of OSE Europe. It is great when there are loads of people, willing to support and fund the project of creating a vital and healthy Open Source Ecology Movement in europe. But the more people contribute, the more difficulties arise, when one wants to find a strategy to start, and how to get things running. Doing Mail contacts and Skype conferences help very much to clarify thoughts and ideas, but as this always depends on peer-to-peer communication it will never converge as fast as it hast to, and there will be loads of misunderstandings, false hopes and wrong believes. Just because the people never told each other the whole picture without details what they want to achieve. Often of course the people didn't tell each other because they had no clear vision, they just had this itching feeling in the head, this nifty lightheadedness and fast bumping heart when trying to focus on the problem. On the other hand, there are the people with very clear visions, ideas an plans who exactly know where to go and what to do next. This is great, but when the communication lacks severe problems arise. Often the communication done by this people is incomplete or one-sided. It never matters why the communication is like that. Because of wrong assumption what the others know, the feeling of having the same goal or just difficulties in make oneself clear. It happens to everyone and all the time, especially when one is not familiar with the prevailing culture the language in use or other conventions.

As OSE Europe will include many people from different countries with different background, different ages, different knowledge, different goals, different capabilities, different motivations and so one there is the need to form a foundation. A foundation on which the European Source Ecology Community can grow and evolve. For this purpose I strongly recommend the people interested in OSE Europe to make a Vision Paper.

So what is a Vision Paper? The first time I encountered the idea was in Holistic Management by Allan Savory and since then I'm a true fan of it. A Vision Paper is a possibility to express ones Vision about an endeavor or project one starts or participates. It is not so much about the path how to achieve the results, it is more something like How will it be in three years? What will be achieved? Where will I and we be there? It's very personal statement about the ideas, visions and dreams leading oneself. But is should not be to far of reality. Of course, in a Vision Paper will be very much that never sees the light of day, but also there will be everything essential that leads one and motivates one. Also a Vision Paper is not static. You will have to rewrite it from time to time. Also it is very surprising to look back to ones early visions of the project, just to see how far away oneself or the project hast evolved. Normally not to the bad. So in short, a Vision Paper is a possibility to express all the expectations of a project. The project can be virtually everything, and it is great for a team to have a Vision Paper together, as well as it is great for every single person to have its Vision Paper. And there we are, to get a stable fundament on which OSE Europe can rest I think there has to be something like a Vision Paper written by the participating people. And to get to this Vision Paper it won't be enough to meet once ore make some calls, unless there are loads of Vision Papers available to everyone to get the spirit.

We are preparing for a conference call, as announced in the blog by Will Cleaver. More information will be published here.

Share your Vision
Share your Vision with us! We are all coming from different backgrounds with different ideas and different feelings what should be done next in Europe. As there are many people interested in the project give us your Vision what OSE in Europe should be about.

Create a subpage like this or put it on another place in the web you like and add the link to the column above.

Don't read Vision Papers of other people before you write your own, so you will be unbiased. You also can put your Vision below your Team Culturing you personal wiki page, as the Vision is somehow an extension of the Team Culturing with more bias on the emotional and motivational stuff.

Put in the vision paper what you expect of OSE Europe. What you want to happen, how you see it in three years, and how you contributed to this process. Put in everything what you can think of, but don't get (too) unrealistic. This will help us all to get a common foundation and what to do next.

Your Vision can of course be in every format you like. Audio, Video or Written or what you can think of. Feel free to do choose your media. More about the idead behind sharing your vision you can find here

Goals
What will be the goals of OSE Europe? There are several possibilities, not mutually exclusive:

* OSE Advocacy and "Publicity" in Europe
* An open business, where people can work for a living building and selling products using OSE technology
* A FactoreFarm for Europe: Means developing tools in parallel with the current Factor e Farm.
* A community: creating a self sustaining village using the GVCS
Communication
We are preparing for a conference call, as announced in the blog by Will Cleaver. More information will be published here.
