This is especially useful in urban environments where space is more limited and the price of land is more a barrier to entry for prospective home owners and business developers. Want a cheap, rough-and-ready shelter on your piece of land? A used 40 foot shipping containers costs about $2000. They measure 8 feet (2.44m) wide, 40 feet (12.19m) long and 8 feet 6 inches (2.59m) tall. That's an area of 320 square feet (29.74m2). Buy three of these, stick them together and you have something the size of a nice one-bedroom apartment that cost you just $6000.

One option is to partially bury the container for an [[Underground Housing|underground house]]. You may need to put up a pillar or two to support the weight of the roof. Use a metal saw to cut out holes for windows, pipes, or stairs to the second floor.

You need to put up insulation and install electrical fixtures and other fittings. A bare shipping container will also look terrible from the outside, so you will want to cover it in graffiti, plaster it, cover it with wood panels, or whatever.

Geodesic domes can be built easily and cheaply and are the strongest and lightest structure yet conceived. Compared to a rectangular structure of similar size, they have half as much wall-area, which means they lose only half as much heat through the walls. This makes them very energy-efficient.

A geodesic dome is built from a skeleton of triangles, covered with an outer skin. The skeleton could be made of wood, steel or other substances, which could probably be [[Digital fabrication|digitally fabbed]].

Greenhouses are rooms that maximize natural light and can be used for controlled-environment growing. They may be stand-alone or part of a house. We aim to open source robust growing systems. This will empower people to grow high-value crops such as herbs - for self-sufficiency and for market.

Greenhouses need to stay warm all year round. This can be accomplished without using any energy at all - no electric heaters or fuel. A well-designed greenhouse can do this by using [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_thermal_store seasonal thermal store], heat sinks, insulation and maximising solar heat and light. In keeping with Open Ecology principles, we aim to gather information in the public domain that allows people to build cheap, effective, zero-energy greenhouses.

The only trick would be creating a good seal around the air columns. Most greenhouse film is a UV resitant type of polyethylene and can be "welded". [http://www.delviesplastics.com/welding.htm Here] is a plastic welding kit for $288. There may be better ways of doing but the concept seems to have potential.

The concept was later applied on a much larger scale in the [http://www.edenproject.com/ Eden Project].

==Passive solar greenhouses==
[[File:Bolivian solar greenhouse.JPG|thumb|right|400px|Bolivian solar greenhouse]]Solar greenhouses incorporate special design features to maximize use of the Sun's heat so they can run without an input of energy. The article [http://www.maximumyield.com/article_sh_db.php?articleID=289 Those Remarkable Bolivian Solarhouses] from Maximum Yield magazine describes a UN project in Bolivia. Over 300 solarhouses were built. They cost $6/m2 (56c per square foot) and proved themselves capable of growing warm-climate vegetables throughout winter high in the Andes without heaters. The article gives detailed descriptions of how they are built.

The design needs to do two things in order to achieve a comfortable growing temperature year-round: firstly, to maximise the use of the Sun's heat and light and secondly, to create a 'thermal mass' effect i.e. include elements that do not change temperature easily, to stabilize the indoor temperature.

Solar greenhouse design features can include -
*Low walls, only 100-120cm high (39-47 inches), painted black. Made of adobe and straw. For OSE, [[Superinsulated CEB Construction‎]] would be perfect. Alternatively, the floor could be sunk below ground level to provide better thermal mass, but this would require more labour to build.
*A domed or sloped roof of wooden poles stretched over clear polyethylene sheeting
*"Small windows are constructed in the adobe walls to allow for opening and closing to raise or lower temperature"
*The floor can be painted black or covered with something black to increase the heat it stores.
*If thermal mass needs to be increased more, fill black plastic bags with gravel or sand; these will store heat. In the Bolivian project, two liter bottles were painted black and filled with sand for this purpose. Black stones can also be used.
*Water tanks also act as a heat store. It might be worth considering [[Aquaponics|aquaponics]] in a solar greenhouse, as a large fishtank will regulate the temperature of the room. A large rainwater catchment, painted black, will work too.

==Earth Sheltered and Walipini greenhouses==
[[File:Walipini.jpg|thumb|400px|right|Walipini greenhouse]]A greenhouse can be built by digging a hole in the ground and covering it with glass. This takes advantage of the heat stored in the earth during the cold season (warmth in winter, cooling in summer). It is an adaptation of the idea of [http://earthshelters.com/faq/passive-annual-heat-storage-definition/ passive annual heat storage (PAHS)] to the greenhouse. Therefore very suitable for climates with cold winters. At the depth of several meters, there is very little seasonal variation in temperature. The earth around the greenhouse structure has large thermal mass.

The Benson Agriculture and Food Institute at Brigham Young University examined the concept in detail and has [http://www.bensoninstitute.org/Publication/Manuals/Walipini.pdf put together a manual] with specific designs ([http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/File:Walipini.pdf internal copy here]). These underground greenhouses are called ''"Walipini"'' (pit greenhouse) in South America. The Benson Institute's experiment was built in Bolivia, high up in the Andes where it gets ''really'' cold. Their greenhouse costs $250-$300 in materials and is designed to provide vegetables year-round for seven people. They recommend a minimum of 94 square feet (less than 8.75m2) of growing space per person.

=OSE Europe Foundation Charter=

Open Source Ecology Europe is chartered for the purpose of furthering the goals of Open Source Ecology, based in Missouri, US. It will adhere to the goals as determined by OSE International. Its aim is to provide a regional structure that will work towards the completion of the GVCS 50 by January 2013. It is a European group in which local chapters and individuals can come together to raise monies for the GVSC 50 prototyping. It is a networking organisation that allows people to meet like-minded OSEEr’s. OSE Europe is considered a branch of the central OSE organization. After January 2013 assuming the deliverables have been met, It will co-ordinate the efforts of
European local chapter and Village activities to promote OSE concepts including the GVCS technologies, abundance based economies, sustainable agriculture, and cooperative living. This will be achieved through educating and informing people on the topic of open source technology and lifestyle. Any funding generated will go to the development of the Global Village Construction Set at Factor e Farm until the January 2013. After which the OSEE governance rules will apply.

= Share your Vision =

Share your Vision with us! We are all coming from different backgrounds with different ideas and different feelings what should be done next in Europe. As there are many people interested in the project give us your Vision what OSE in Europe should be about.

Create a subpage like [http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Open_Source_Ecology_Europe/Firstname_Lastname this] or put it on another place in the web you like and add the link to the column above.

Don't read Vision Papers of other people before you write your own, so you will be unbiased. You also can put your Vision below your Team Culturing you personal wiki page, as the Vision is somehow an extension of the Team Culturing with more bias on the emotional and motivational stuff.

Put in the vision paper what you expect of OSE Europe. What you want to happen, how you see it in three years, and how you contributed to this process. Put in everything what you can think of, but don't get (too) unrealistic. This will help us all to get a common foundation and what to do next.

==Goals==

OSE Europe will be an [[OSE Regional Charter|OSE Regional Group]]. The main goals will be defined soon.

What will be the goals of OSE Europe? There are several possibilities, not mutually exclusive:

* OSE Advocacy and "Publicity" in Europe
* An open business, where people can work for a living building and selling products using OSE technology
* A FactoreFarm for Europe: Means developing tools in parallel with the current Factor e Farm.
* A community: creating a self sustaining village using the GVCS
