He graduated with honors from Princeton and earned his PhD in fusion physics from the University of Wisconsin. Frustrated with the lack of relevance to pressing world issues in his education, he founded Open Source Ecology in 2003 in order to make closed-loop manufacturing a reality. He began development on the Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) (see his 2011 TED Talk), an open source DIY tool set of 50 different industrial machines necessary to create a small civilization with modern comforts.

His work has recently been recognized in his acceptance as a 2012 TED Senior Fellow, a 2012 Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow, and his TED Talk was named the top 6th in the Huffington Post Best of TED 2011. His goal is to create the open source economy - an economy that optimizes both production and distribution - while providing environmental regeneration and social justice. To this end, Marcin is currently building a team of global collaborators and on-site builders for his land-based facility - to take this from concept to reality. He believes that the open source economy is a prerequisite to autonomy that allows people to pursue mastery - consistent with higher purpose.}}}
Get a DBA (Doing Business As) if you need one

If your business name is different than your registered name, then you need a DBA (short for "doing business as"). You'll also need one if you prefer to receive payments under a name that isn't an exact match of your newly registered name or you plan to operate more than one business under your registered name.

Set Up a Business Bank Account

Your LLC should receive payments in a separate account under its registered name or DBA. You'll need a copy of the LLC documents that were filed with the state or your DBA and your Tax ID when you set up or change the name on your account.
Legally Bulletproofing your LLC

File Governing Documents If you haven't yet, you can avoid being subject to your state's default LLC laws by filing a LLC Operating Agreement. In some states a LLC Operating Agreement is required.

Pay State Fees on Time You don't want to lose the protection of limited liability status, so pay your annual state fees and file any needed annual or biannual reports with your state when due.

Keep Finances Separate Combining business and personal finances can lead to a loss of limited liability protection, so set up separate checking and credit card accounts for your LLC.

Process Documentation Standards

Summary and Rationale
What
This process deals with:
*Responding to new subscribers
*Responding to cancellations
*Sending mass emails to True Fans
*Posting a numbers graph of True Fans
*Having True Fans put up their profile
*Making it easy to communicate with True Fans to involve them in activities
*Handling regular communication to True Fans

Why
Without a standard process, inconsistencies can quickly arise and certain tasks can fall through the cracks. Also, much time much be spent on drafting multiple emails with similar content and having to decide what to do about certain situations. By having a concise plan about how and what to do about all these things, we achieve a far more streamlined process, clear answers to questions from TFs, and overall, more consistency in messages to, and treatment of, all TFs.
We want to involve the True Fans in our work as some of the core of our community.

Who
To be determined by ED or other administrative staff. Currently handled by Parker Bonnell. Well defined process allows to be taken on by a remote collaborator.

When
This differs depending on the particular process. See specific types below for details.
<br>
Processes
View/Edit
<html>
</html>
Process Types
Documentation of Statistics
*Graph of True Fan numbers shall be updated and posted visibly on a monthly basis.
Email Handling
<b>Most contact with True Fans comes through email. Before handling the various types of messages, a few steps should be taken to configure your inbox to best receive and sort the messages. The following steps are tested and proven to work, but don't hesitate to suggest other options if you see something that could help with organization or handling of emails.</b>
<br>
*Currently, all messages flow through opensourceeco@gmail.com, so this is the source to work from when forwarding or setting up filters. Permission from the current caretaker of the account will need to be granted before it can be used, or the caretaker can set up automatic e-mail forwarding to your personal inbox. The address at opensourceeco@gmail is prone to change however, once 501(c)3 status is achieved and we have access to free version of Google Apps.

*If not already established, set up email filter to direct all incoming True Fan messages to separate tag. Use message from subject line that occurs consistently between message types (“new subscription” to new signups, etc).

*Attach corresponding labels to mark them as True Fan emails, and have sub-labels to distinguish between types. (TF/NewSub, TF/Cancellation, etc).

*If desired, set up multiple inbox system to send all TF emails to separate box.

*Use separate color star for TF email chains that require follow-up.

New Subscriptions
*When new subscription email comes in, use the subscriber email address provided in the message from Paypal to send the new subscriber a new join True Fan Emails email.

*If desired, create a canned response in Gmail with this template to save time.

*Modify custom fields in the email--for now just Name, but also possibly custom Tier-based gift message if that plan is implemented.

*Send email using truefans@opensourceecology.org handle

Cancelled Subscription
*Auto forwarding for attention. See Automatic Forwarding.
*When a user cancels, use subscriber email address to send cancellation True Fan Emails, again making sure to modify custom name field.

*Follow-up as needed if they reply.

Monthly Financial Download
*At the beginning of each month, go to Paypal to download the last month’s transactions.

*Filter out non-payments and non-True Fan related entries, and sort remaining entries by type (Donation or Subscription or Payment).

*Import these three categories to their respective sheets in the current year's spreadsheet at Paypal Finances

*Update graphs and summaries in overview spreadsheet at Paypal Finances as needed.

Donations
There are also random donations that come in to the project. Set up accounting for this.
*Respond to these immediately just like True Fans.
*Log them by adding to our Dear True Fans and Supporters list

OSE Swag Process
*This involves rewards to large True Fans subscribers, so this should be set up.

Questions
Are you interested in working on-site at FeF or are you interested in remote collaboration?
*It's not exactly "remote" consultant. I'm a consultant and I spend a lot of time onsite. It's just for the hard core design I prefer to do it here (in India) as it doesn't require me to be at a place. I will be spending time onsite.

When are you available?
*I think we would have to split up the schedule (once we make one). The first schedule (the time I spend at OSE) would be for studying your requirement. This can be done remote so I can start right now. The next would be to study your requirement onsite. The time should be max 3 weeks for any product. Then i do concepts which again can be done remote and can be mailed to you. I might have to visit in between fr reference, etc. This could be for a week max. Once the concept is frozen i can then move to proper design and mfg drawings which can be done remote. The actual building should take 8-10 weeks. This can either be done here or there. Hope the above is clear. I think building, testing can happen at OSE i.e onsite hence I might have to be there the whole 8 weeks.

What are you interested in getting out of this opportunity?
*I get the satisfaction of having worked on machines. Its something I've been doing since I was a kid hence I use the words "love" when i talk about my work. I've always believed knowledge should be open source. Can you imagine how many Indian farmers would benefit if OSE started an Indian operation? I can help you guys with that. Agriculture is struggling here and OSE could help a LOT. I can help OSE establish itself in India.

What are your three strongest skills that you bring to this position?
*I can design machines very well...a love for all mechanical systems which I'm sure can be put to good use by OSE.
*Machine design is something I'm passionate about. I love agricultural machines like tractors which you can see a lot in the Sketchea site

What are the principles you use as guidance?
*Honesty...i cant live with a lie even for a minute. That might sound cliched but thats how I am. This is something my dad taught me when we were really bad financially. I live by that. Machine design is my first love so I want to contribute something through that.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?
*I love machine design so much that if something interesting pops up I tend to lose a bit financially just for the love of designing and building that machine.

What are some of your outside interests?
*Motorcycling, reading automotive history, motor sports (I used to work in a motor sport company before starting on my own), reading fiction (Grisham, Puzo, Archer, Wilbur Smith, etc).

Would you be willing to volunteer your time, or would you be seeking payment?
*I would be seeking payment

Tell me about at least one time you failed miserably and what you did about it?
*I've never failed "miserably" as failure doesn't cause me misery. I've failed big in sport..I used to be a cricketer (hope you are familiar with cricket) and failed to score big for nearly 3 years...I just kept going and scored big in year 4. Its not like I want to show I'm tough or anything... its just that I ensure failure teaches me, rahter than being bogged down by it.

Parker Bonnell: /* Email Handling */

<br>

Questions
*How do you use Campaign Monitor step by step to:
**Input new names, categorize as True Fans
**Send mass emails?
*How do you tell when someone was added to Campaign monitor?

RACI Cubed
*Responsible for doing work - The True Fans Ambassador. Parker. To True Fans and any Donors.
*Accountable - Parker to True Fans and ED to keep True Fans informed on progress. 24 hour work week response period to new Subscribers, Donors. Monthly update of TF numbers graph. Financial accounting on OSE Finances, on a monthly basis at time of monthly payment
*Consulted - this process, approved by ED, is sufficient to define process, and then it's taken on automatically by Responsible person
*Informed - Reporting to community. Response emails forwarded to ED. ED can see entire list of emails. World sees process. World sees True Fans numbers. OSEMail communicates to True Fans and World the weekly updates. World sees message from True Fans on True Fans wiki page.
*Instructed - any outside collaborator can examine entire process, access relevant info, and execute the same to relieve or share process with current Responsible party.
*Inspired - process is made part of community process so another person can be inspired to take on the work.

<br>
*Currently, all messages flow through opensourceeco@gmail.com, so this is the source to work from when forwarding or setting up filters. Permission from the current caretaker of the account will need to be granted before it can be used, or the caretaker can set up automatic e-mail forwarding to your personal inbox. The address at opensourceeco@gmail is hopefully prone to change however, once 501(c)3 status is achieved and we have access to free version of Google Apps (wherein we can set up an individual truefans@opensourceecology.org address).

Administration
*Discussed need for uninterrupted power supply for RAID array with Yoonseo and Tristan. Also made discovery about automatic voltage regulators that are recommended for use in buildings with off-grid power to protect sensitive electronics equipment. Yoonseo acknowledged that we certainly have power surges and general fluctuation and that such a regulator would be advisable. Such fluctuation would also explain why the stove electronics no longer work, possibly why the routers are failing and my computer no longer works.
Construction
*Helped move debris from around workshop so Graham could plaster
Research
*Since the Drobo was finally released, I was about to order. Quickly determined that it was far from the ideal choice. Further, discovered that we could even get a RAID array that would not simply hook up to one computer, but could be integrated directly into the internet router. This is a huge benefit because we would not only get a large data repository for video and other content attached to an individual computer, but one that would be accessible by anyone on the same wireless network. Thus, large (and small) files could be shared between computers rapidly without having to upload to the cloud or transfer via flash drives, and it would be far to collaborate on the same file. Further, a network attached storage system such as this could be upgraded into the setup of an in-house server at another point if we decide to go that route. Research into best models and how to set up the system ended up taking most of the afternoon instead of the less-than-an-hour initial timeframe expectation when I was simply planning on confirming that the Drobo was the correct choice.
Interviews
*Interviewed Franklin Griffin via Skype. Recorded conversation, video export failed and only audio could be uploaded. Have since fixed the issue by speaking to Aidan and downloading different software for audio/video recording. Candidates information can be viewed at Franklin_Griffin_Interview.
Administration
*Interviewed Aidan to discuss work plan. Spoke a bit about general things needing doing around here starting in late December. Suggested structure construction, workshop/Hablab improvements, Microtrack, etc. Logged here. Next step looks to be him drafting rough proposal.
*TF Emails
*Forwarded Bill information on Open Source Economy.
*Corresponded with Kickstarter candidate who never received T-shirt.
*Emailed Ken Christensen at Hagerman & Company Inc. and made payment fee for Autodesk licenses.
*TF Emails
*Created backlog.
Recruiting
*Emailed Martin for interview. He was out of state last week, and might visit in person tomorrow on his way back for an interview. If not, we'll Skype at his earliest convenience once he returns home.
*Contact with Rahul who created page exhibiting his works Rahul_Log
**Waiting on reply from Marcin regarding details of project
*Emailed Aidan to set up time to discuss work plan on Skype
*Emailed Ed Reasner (originally Prototyper applicant) to set up Skype interview.
Construction
*Replaced chicken floor swept yesterday with fresh straw.
*Finished spray painting majority of the house. Now protected from rust, and existing rust damage will be hampered from getting worse. Not quite life-time design, but the rust prevention will certainly give the coop a number of more years versus if it had been left alone.
*Week Milestones Review from last week.:
**Completion of OSEmail #2 and post to Blog. - done
**Conduct interviews for other applicants and review those who shifted from prototyper to designer - no interviews done
**True Fan process map, and link to TF handling process - not done
**Start Accounting process page - rough draft
**OSE Swag Store up and running - no products up yet
*Summary: Worked 3 of 5 days. Most of the work not done.
Construction
*Swept out entire chicken coop and rustled out debris
*Scrubbed and cleaned laying boxes, ground down rust
*Started spray painting to prevent further, and slow down development of existing, rust.

Thurs. Nov 1 2012
*Implemented changes suggested by Aaron and Marcin in OSEmail 2. Scheduled to be sent at 12:30 am tomorrow morning.
*Set up payee information and store on CafePress. Incomplete Store. Determined a better vector graphic of the logo would be needed without any white background behind the logo. Will have to be done either when I get back or by Aaron in Illustrator (unless it can be done in Gimp?)
