Hi! Welcome to the Wiki of Open Source Ecology Argentina!

We are in an expansion period (as of May 2012), the distances and the resource costs are many in this moment. We are developing projects that allow us to reach our target in the least possible time.
The current state of OSE Argentina is this (as of May 2012):

Projects in action
* "Access to Land Now": Collective purchase of large tracts of land at low cost (u$d 100/Has) for Open Source Ecology and Permaculture projects.
** The group is on Facebook >>>
* Translate to Spanish the most relevant material to realize a strategic diffusion in technical/engineering colleges, universities, cultural centers, cooperatives, foundations and groups of people interested in the OSE project.
** Document to translate >>>

Proposals
* Creation of local groups to fabricate different prototypes by means of collective financing (for example idea.me >>> ). This way one group can construct a brick press and another group can construct a termosolar collector, etc. In one year we'll gather to demonstrate the potential of the modularity and the distance work team, sharing experiences and reinforce the humans relations.

If you are interested in participating in OSE Argentina, please contact us via e-mail or join us in the Facebook group of OSE named Open Source Ecology (Argentina) following this link >>>

Here we are developing an open source quick attach system for implements on tractors/skid steers of under 9000 lb weight. See former work on the LifeTrac#Quick Attach Plate

Present conclusions:
*We would like to have a middle attachment position like at LifeTrac#Quick Attach Plate, so that LifeTrac could handle small implements, such as the universal rotor. The SAE J2513 standard has only 2 outer attachments to the skid loader, making the attachment conform to this standard. We do not see a need for making the attachment more complex for small implements that require a '3 point attachment' instead of a
'4 point attachments.' Thus, we conclude that the SAE J2513 standard does not meet OSE Specifications.
*To accommodate interchangeability of implements between LifeTrac and non-Factor e Farm industry standards, we recommend an adapter plate SAE J2513 machines to be able to use LifeTrac implements. An adapter for SAE J2513 implements to be used on LifeTrac is a moot point, since open source LifeTrac implements are expected to be much more cost effective compared to the SAE J2513 standard.

Skid Steer SAE J2513 standard, from discussion here:

Point: As far as we know, LifeTrac is the only device that includes the functionality of an agricultural tractor and skid-steer loader in one.

Skid Loader specialization:
*Hydraulic drive allows immediate reversal of direction - allowing for rapid digging/moving tasks
*Tight turning because the wheels skid on the ground (hence the name). A skid steer can essentially turn a circle in place
*Hydraulic takeoff can power a variety of implements
*Heavy duty tires, about $300 each
*Quick attach plate is used for rapid interchange of implements

LifeTrac Comparison to Skid Loader:
*Hydraulic drive just like in skid steers has identical performance.
*Tight turning is achieved via articulation of the tractor up to about a 40 degree angle
*Hydraulic takeoff can power a variety of implements
*16" truck tires with chains attain high performance at a cost of $30 per wheel (with used tires)
*Quick attach plate is used for rapid interchange of implements

Tractor Specialization:
*Faster speed and larger size allows large tracts of land to be worked
*Power take off shaft can power a variety of implements
*3-point hitch allows the use of a wide range of agricultural implements on the back of the tractor
*Large rear wheels provide effective traction; dually (doubled) wheel configuration may be used

LifeTrac Comparison to Tractor:
*High speed can be achieved by going into 2 wheel drive mode, for large-scale agricultural tasks
*Power take off (PTO) shaft can power a variety of implements; PTO is movable, and can be attached on rear, on quick attach plate, or anywhere else.
*Movable 3-point hitch allows the use of a wide range of agricultural implements - either on the end of the tractor or on the front quick attach plate.
*4 wheel drive, inexpensive wheels with chains provide good traction; dually wheel configuration may be used

Discussion:
*LifeTrac has the quick back-and-forth motion found in skid steers - to allow effective digging/moving functions with loader. At the same time, it has the speed and PTO/3-point hitch ability that makes it capable of any agricultural tasks, up to about a 40 acre scale (about 1 hp/acre figure of merit). One cannot do effective, accurate digging with a tractor, where one cannot make sharp turns and must change gears to change direction. All in all, using industrial equipment, one needs both a tractor and a skid loader to do all the functions of which LifeTrac is capable.

*Does anyone know of any single device that has the functionality of both a standard agricultural tractor and a skid steer in one, as found in LifeTrac? See discussion -
square tube construction techniques
The basic frame is bolted together from 4x4x1/4" square tubing.
That basic frame looks very similar to the "grid beam" techniques.

* Would it be possible to build the basic frame using standard grid beams? (2x2" square tubing?)
* Since both LifeTrac and "grid beam" are open-source, is it possible to make a modular construction system that combines the best parts of both systems?

The optional tracks provide the LifeTrac with additional weight and traction. These instructions provide mounting instructions for the tracks.

Procedure
# Position the LifeTrac on a level work surface.
# Put blocks in front and behind the wheels of one side of the LifeTrac.
# On the other side of the LifeTrac, let the air out of the two tires until they have about 5 PSI. Position a hydraulic or scissor jack in the center of the frame and extend the jack until both front and rear wheels are 2" above the ground.
#Move the tracks in front of the lifted wheels and pull the leading edge over the top of the tires. Hold the leading track against the tire and rotate the tire until the track is underneath the tire. Do the same with the trailing track and the first tire.
# Use a winch and chain to draw the leading and trailing tracks together until they can be secured with the couplers.
# Re-inflate the tires and lower the jack.
# Repeat the above steps for the other side.

Using Tracks
Use the primarily on soil and not on asphalt or concrete, as the abrasion from these will cause premature wear of the tracks.

<br style="clear: both"/>

===Future Plans===
Proposal 2012 contains all the updated information about the vision of the GVCS. The goal is to gather $2.4M of support to complete the GVCS in 2 years (the end of 2012).

GVCS components expected in 2011 are:
* Power Cube III – 55 HP (Horse Power)
* CNC Torch Table I
* LifeTrac III
* Soil Pulverizer III
* Modern Steam Engine I – Our goal is on the order of $500 in materials cost for a 1 kW generator, with favorable cost scaling for higher power. Introduction and more videos are available here: 1 kW Steam Engine Electric Generator Prototype
* Ironworker machine II
* Aluminum extraction from clay

If Support_Open_Source_Ecology and collaborators are found, other parallel developments are possible.

Actualmente tenemos 4 tractores, 4 prensas CEB, 8 Power Cubes y 2 Pulverizadores Soil to be built till the end of Mai.

Construction business using the Tractor-Soil Pulverizer-Compressed Eearth Brick (CEB) Press package will start in Los Angeles by an early adopter, Joskua Designs. This will be the first field testing outside of Factor E Farm. The building project in California will have to deal with earthquake codes.

We will also do prototype CEB/straw housing units with the assistance from our new Polish friends to build out as needed to accommodate other developers at Factor e Farm.

We'll be holding our first major Factor e Farm Convergence (Kansas City Area) on September 1-30 at Factor e Farm, to make major strides on the ground with respect to the Global Vilage Construction Set (GVCS) development.

Distributed power generation is a clear goal – the next major field of endeavor for Factor e Farm, which would allow us to fuel our operation for free – from agriculture, off-grid fabrication workshop, to living and transportation.

After the GVCS completion the first OSE Community will be built and Education and Training in 2-year immersion program are planned.

Adam Shilling, a True Fan, is planning a GVCS game based on the GVCS as the inspiration for its connection to the real world. Adam is going to South America to meet real people – to assess the needs of real communities. The project will link gaming to the real world – where money exchanged ends up purchasing things like tractors or renewable energy equipment for villages in South America.

A Documentary Film about Factory E Farm may come in the future.

Support OSE and collaborate with us to help us make this happen.

Connections
Conor, I have an ongoing conversation with some permaculture authors, and folks involved with the Apios Institute forest garden wiki, which I think is an early step towards permaculture software. They're willing to think about libre licensing, and a next step involves me explaining it to them in ways they understand. Whatever happens with them, I'd like to get a libre, participatory permaculture knowledge base going, and I wonder if you'd like to be in touch about that. I agree with your idea that making the platform for creating and charing content is very important, and that's where most of my interest lies.
Power Cube
How can the power cube be brought into the current category structure? It is used with so many other applications that is seems difficult to categorize, but it does need to be included. Marie.Byleen 12:43, 26 February 2011 (PST)
:Energy, I'd say. Thanks for your efforts getting it formatted. --Conor 13:20, 26 February 2011 (PST)

Preliminary Information
Do you have any ideas for how to organize information gathered about a technology before that technology has been open sourced? I'm looking specifically at the information on pelletizing. Marie.Byleen 13:41, 26 February 2011 (PST)
:What I've been doing: put it on one page, where the title is the name of the technology. Category template at the top. That's all, just lay it out clearly, cut out repetition. There might be a more sophisticated way, but this works fine for now.

Things I'm not clear on regarding the CEB Press
*How many versions were made? Is The Liberator Beta v1.0 the same as The Liberator 2?
*What is the price of the manual version?
*Does the Liberator require "aggregates"/gravel?
*Can it make more than one size of brick?
*What buildings have been built with it? How are they holding up? Are there pictures of them on the wiki?
*What was the cost per square foot of CEB building (incl. $10/hour for labour)? Marcin wrote in 2008 that $6/square foot was expected, but that experiments would confirm that.
*How do the ergonomics compare to commercial machines? Are they one-man shows?
*What are the "arms" for?

editing the wiki
what do you usually like to edit on here? i see you do alot of stuff but it seems kinda random on which topic you're doing. are there any areas you need help researching and organizing?
:The CEB Press is our top priority by far. There's a lot of information on the wiki (and some on the blog) about the machine; I want to get it organized properly so that people coming to the project with no previous knowledge can understand exactly how the machine works and how they can build one. I could really use a hand organizing that info; look at the pages listed in the template at the top of CEB Press Intro to see what needs to be done.
::i looked around at the ceb fabrication pages. i see thats its fragmented on a couple different pages. whats the end goal ideally going to look like? one main fabrication page with links to each sub section? or one page for the start to finish production?

i don't really know what this is about myself. i've moved your request to the discussion page in the meantime. :)
