Pyrolysis Oil from Biomass

Wolfrick: /* Introduction */

Introduction
Pyrolysis Oil is a product of anaerobic distillation of biomass. Upon heating of wood or other biomass in an air-tight chamber, the gases that are produced may be liquified by cooling. These gases condense to an oil: pyrolysis oil. This oil may be used as a dense fuel source - for applications such as heating and steam engines. It may be burned by a burner such as the Babington_Burner. As such, this is a lower-tech substitute for petroleum fuels, roughly equivalent to diesel fuel - though at present it cannot be substituted for diesel in internal-combustion engines. Both synthesis and pyrolysis oil are one way towards a biofuel future.

Student Projects
A great experiment that can be done in a semester is the construction of a simple distillation apparatus to test the procedure with wood chips or newspaper - and to measure the purity and composition of the resulting fuel.

Basic Experiment
A basic experiment can be performed readily by heating biomass in a 55 gallon metal drum. An external fire may be applied, or an electric heating element may be installed. The vapors that come off can be sent into another drum, submerged in cool water for condensation to occur. A weep hole is put in the second drum for pressure release, and gases may be flared, or captured, at this outlet as the reaction proceeds. When all biomass is distilled, the flare gassing will stop.

The resulting product can then be analyzed.

*Flammability test
**Is fuel readily usable in a [Babington burner]?
*Heating to drive off water
*Heating to drive off lighter fractions to produce fuel oil
*Further heating to provide heavier oils or lubricants
*Cooling to separate phases
*Freezing to separate phases or to separate water

Wolfrick: Concerns and Questions about printed beehives

Concerns:
How much does the plastic cost versus local wood?
How much is heat used in beekeeping (heated knives to open honeycomb) and is it hot enough to warp or destroy the polycaprolactone build material used by RepRap etc.?
Is it possible to build a (heh) honeycomb structure which maintains the outer surface contour of "standard" beehive components, and thus be compatible so beekeepers could mix-and-match printed versus traditional components in their hives? Using a hollow-but-reinforced printed structure could reduce weight while maintaining enough strength. But this requires research. A frame loaded with wax and honey has considerable weight. How much? How strong do the frames need to be to resist the load placed on them?

Surfaces: Can RepRap printed objects be sterilized to eliminate bacteria, fungus, etc which attack hives? Do they provide crevices for mites etc?
And the big one: will the bees accept the material and build in printed hives?

Perhaps we'd be better off focusing on 3D/2.5D _routed_ wooden hives. A single CNC router could produce many many hives to be distributed in an area for the cost of the wood/plywood/MDF/OSB/foam material used to make the structures.

At the moment, I'm working on documenting the Compressed Earth Block Press machines with 3D CAD models and eventually 2D drawings, exploded drawings of the assemblies, bills of material, cut lists and instructions on how to put it all together. I think I'm in a perfect position to "make it look pretty" as well as create clear instructions so anyone can build a Liberator CEB. I'm proud to be contributing, and look forward to visiting FeF sometime soon.----Wolfrick 12:34, 10 February 2011 (PST)

>I'm feeling a little lost, not knowing quite where to start. Maybe by writing this, I'll attract a little attention >and get pulled into the mix :)
>Feel free to email me, or comment here to give me some direction.

I wrote the above when I found the site back in 2009, and since I was still in school, I got distracted by busting my arse to finish my degree programs in time. Which I did, with straight 4.0GPA :D

I'm proud to be contributing, and look forward to visiting FeF sometime soon.Wolfrick 12:34, 10 February 2011 (PST)

Hi Rick,
That's just what we need. The documentation for the Liberator is all on this wiki, but it is disorganized and there are several different versions of the machine muddled up. You will find all the documentation at :Category:CEB Press. We need to get the information that is there organized: bill of materials with sources, how to assemble the machine, how to install the firware, and how to use the machine. See the Mendel build guide for a model; we need to get our instructions as clear as those.
Again, thanks for the help and the enthusiasm. Thanks! That helped quite a bit. I'm compiling what I need, and have downloaded the .dxf files for, I assume, the current version, v2.2.
I am going to build a parametric model of the machine which can be reconfigured to different block sizes later.
It would help to be able to confer directly with one or more members of the design team, people who can answer questions like "why did you choose to do x this way?" and so forth, as I build the model.
Once I have the 3D model of all the parts, making nice 2D drawings for the build instructions will be much easier, including cut lists and BOM.
Before I make the 2D drawings, I'd like to have the 3D machine reviewed. Can someone put me in touch with the people I need to talk to about reviewing it?
Here's a quick 3D "weldment" I whipped up to show I'm serious :)
I'm a CAD draftsman and designer, and I would like to assist in the design and documentation of the Liberator project.
I have emailed joseph.dolittle@gmail.com yesterday but have not yet heard back from him. I'm enthusiastic about this project and others here at Open Farm Tech, and would like to make a contribution to their success.
~Rick Berry, aka Wolfrick

Hi Rick,
That's just what we need.
We should be able to complete this within a week or two. --Conor 10:25, 8 February 2011 (PST)

I'm a student at Texas State Technical College in Marshall Texas, where I'm earning an AS degree in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, an AS degree in Computer Aided Drafting & Design, and a business management mini-degree called the Worplace Productivity Certificate. I graduate in December 2009.

Previously, I was in the IT industry for ten years, starting at Apple's award-winning Customer Care helpdesk, and ending up at Ratheon's. I quit the industry in disgust, and decided to go back to school so I could learn to MAKE things.
I've since moved to the country, where I'm improving a smallholding. We have about 15 acres, mostly wooded, with a few goats and some poultry, and plans for more as time goes on.

I've been interested in CNC and small machine shop tools ever since I found David Gingery's series "Build Your Own Machine Shop from Scrap". I'm also interested in permaculture and alternative, environmentally appropriate housing and technology, alternative energy sources and systems, and just about everything else.
I was quite pleased to find this site linked in the MAKE magazine article about the tractor.
I'm feeling a little lost, not knowing quite where to start. Maybe by writing this, I'll attract a little attention and get pulled into the mix :)
Feel free to email me, or comment here to give me some direction.
