Most industrial controls are microcontroller-based. I have worked with both FPGAs and microcontrollers (include a bit with embedded microcontrollers -- e.g. Microblaze -- inside an FPGA), and I&amp;#039;m not clear why the originator has proposed FPGA.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Also, as far as I know, the collaboration tools for open-source development of software/firmware are much more mature than for open-source FPGAs.&lt;br /&gt;
