			I am coming to University of Waterloo to talk about ‘open source ecology’ – a revolutionary experiment in DO IT YOUR SELF, open-source hardware.

			I want to talk about how YOU can learn to build, repair and maintain machines like this [Visual: tractor]

			And buildings like this [Visual: tiny house]

			New micro fabrication technologies such as 3d printing combined with internet-mediated collaboration and sharing, make it possible for ordinary people to manufacture, repair and recycle even high technology machines – in local communities.

			New technologies and new ways of sharing will transform the economy and break the link between industrial technology and mindless consumerism.

			Open Source Ecology is exploring a new world of active, artisanal makers, maintainers, repairers – a world in which individuals and communities can take back control of their local economies and become both more networked and more self-reliant.

			Our long-term aim is for all students, both at school and at university to get a chance to fabricate amazing machines and get a glimpse of a truly sustainable, life-enhancing economy of the future

			And we would like to start right here, in Kitchener-Waterloo:

			Global Village Construction Set, an open source, low-cost, high performance technological platform that allows for the easy, DIY fabrication of the 50 different Industrial Machines that it takes to build a sustainable civilization with modern comforts. The GVCS lowers the barriers to entry into farming, building, and manufacturing and can be seen as a life-size lego-like set of modular tools that can create entire economies, whether in rural Missouri, where the project was founded, in urban redevelopment, or in the developing world.
