FAQ

Q: What is OSE Linux 2.0?

A: It is a highly customized version of Linux Mint 20, which is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, which itself runs atop Debian 11 Bullseye. This means that Debian commands, Ubuntu PPA's, and Linux Mint User Guides will all work fine on OSE Linux 2.0.

For Windows users: you can think of Debian as analagous to DOS, and think of Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and OSE Linux as analagous to different editions of Windows. 

A: What software is pre-installed?

Please have a look through the application categories in the "start menu" to see the customized set of apps that are most useful to OSE Developers. A huge amount of apps are included, including two versions of FreeCAD, Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, Gazebo, Fritzing, Arduino IDE, Processing IDE, KiCAD, LibreCAD, OBS Studio, Kdenlive, MeshLab, COLMAP, and many more. The core OSE applications are in the "Education" category and CAD/CAM/simulation software can be found in the "Office" category.

We are working on a full list of all custom pre-installed software and use cases as we prepare the official OS release.

Q: Anything else?

A: Linux Mint, the base OS of OSE Linux 2.0, has a useful program called Warpinator which, like Apple's AirDrop, can be used to share files across a local network in a seamless manner. Check it out!

A: For legal reasons you need to install support for certain multimedia formats yourself, but it is easy as choosing "Yes" during the install process, or selecting Sound & Video > Install Multimedia Codecs from the start menu while running a live OS or an installed system where "No" was chosen during the install process.

A: Thanks to OSE community member Tauat https://tauat.site for generously contributing some beautiful original photography for the OSE Linux custom backgrounds, including the default. You can find additional custom backgrounds in Preferences>Backgrounds.

HOW TO HELP

Note that many types of 3D printing slicing software are included in the OSE Linux 2.0 Beta; we plan to only offer one or two with the official release. Please evaluate these softwares if you have 3D printing experience. We are especially concerned with which software can do the fastest slicing of as many objects as can fit on a bed at the same time and would like to hear of your experiences there!

The 3D slicing software options:

- Ultimaker Cura 
- Sli3er 
- PrusaSlicer 

Also be aware that running a Live system will not be nearly as performant as an installed system. Please keep comparisons apples-to-apples as much as possible (either do all your 3D slicing tests on a Live system, or all your 3D slicing tests on an Installed system).
