For the future...
There are several very good open source motor controller projects already out there.
http://www.robotpower.com/products/osmc_info.html (All the actual files are on the Yahoo groups page.)
http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/Stepper_Motor_Driver_2_3 (smaller current ratings, but RepRap friendly)
I would like to move towards integrating with the RepRap project, as it will allow the ability to take advantage of the work they have done while being able to contribute motion control for much larger RepRaps.
