Preparation and Planning
- Pack gear, i.e. Workshop safety, recommended clothing, electronics, tools, stainless steel pot, rice and beans, artist supplies, tent, cot, sleeping bag, books, reference materials
Dedicated Project Visit Details
- Duration - 7/6 - 8/2 (long term residency is desired)
- Arrive at FeF on 7/06/13 at 3:00pm
- 7/6-7/7-Settle in at FeF and familiarize myself with FeF site layout and daily life standards and practices
- 7/8-7/12 - Step 1
- 7/15-7/19 - Step 2
- 7/20-7/22 - 3 day trip to Milwaukee; returning the night of 7/22
- 7/23-7/26 - Step 3
- 7/29-8/2 - Step 3 cont.
Note: Saturdays and Sundays will most likely be used to continue laboring with FeF team and/or training in areas of weakness in my professional/personal development
Logistics
- Financial
- I do not desire financial compensation for the DPV
- Financial compensation may be considered if long-term residency is approved
- I will cover all of my financial expenses
- $300 damage deposit will be made to FeF for my DPV
- Food
- I will provide my own food or contribute financially to any current meal practices currently in place
- Shelter
- I will sleep in my tent with a cot
- Transportation
- I have a car that I will use to travel to/from Milwaukee/FeF and get supplies locally
- Insurance
- I have health/dental insurance provided by the local VA hospital
- I have auto insurance and AAA for my vehicle
At Fator e Farm
- Labor and train in Technical Development and documentation to include Design, CAD, materials and parts lists, prototyping, fabrication, R&D, peer review
- Provide support with site management and cooking.
Personal/Professional Development Process at FeF
- Step 1-Laborer/Shop Hand
- Become proficient in standard FeF standard practices and processes
- Adapt to FeF work flow and culture
- Familiarize myself with GVCS prototypes and projects already in process
- Observe FeF products and environment to identify where I may specialize/concentrate my energy and labor to benefit and achieve the mission of FeF and the GVCS
- All of the above will be done by volunteering my time to help in current FeF projects-i.e. sweeping the floor, grabbing a wrench, welding, CAD work, making rice and beans, etc.
- Step 2- Student
- Labor in an area to progress the current FeF projects
- Focus my personal development/research/training/studying to become proficient in a role not currently fulfilled at FeF or one that extra support is needed
- Immerse myself in desired area of expertise-CAD, prototyping, fabrication, design, research
- 50/50 FeF/Personal development-Half of my time as laborer/shop hand and half of my time studying/training in selected area(s) of professional development
- Step 3-Specialization
- Area of study/specialization directly benefits current FeF projects and overall mission of GVCS
- 100% of time-professional/personal development are integrated into daily workflow
- Become highly proficient in area(s) of expertise
- Continue studying/training on my own time to continue professional/personal development
Conclusion of Dedicated Project Visit
- Determine if a long term residency is available
- Identify short term, medium term, and long term goals of residency if it is an offered
At Factor e Farm
- Select soil supplier after soil inspection
- Build ~300 sq ft building with sheltered processing area(doubles as my living quaters until full production is reached and utilizes the entire space; approx. 6 months)
- Build rocket mass heater
- Work with Marshall Hilton to design bicycle-powered harvester for processing the worm castings and increase efficiency by an estimated 50-60%
- Standardize manufacturing process to facilitate worm farm consulting and training for community based worm farms
- Develop methods of manufacturing innovative part designed to retrofit common 5GAL buckets into worm farm production units
- Scale-up worm farm facilites (soil input at $20/cu yd to castings output at $270/cu yd bulk; estimated 1200% ~value added processing)
- Standardize worm production to match fish food supply needs of future aquaponics system.
- Work on CAD with all project
- Organize tools and shop (Meticulous application of 5S to FeF)
- Develop collaboration with National Congress of American Indians

- Develop small scale aquaponics to be scaled up after we all learn the fundamentals and process involved in our own food production
