My View on the future of technology: The powerful weapon that ended the cold war, in my opinion, was the fax machine. I also believe the weapon that will end all other wars will be the computer and internet. Technologies can now be developed and given to the world freely. This marks the beginning of end of the intelllectual property frame work worldwide. We are seeing this in China now. We are seeing current economic leaders rise up against the net and it's free exchange of information. The internet prayed on big businesses inability to react to situations quickly. Computer technology and the internet ensures that secrets can no longer be kept. Knowlege is free to everyone. The brightest and the best thinkers of the past present and future have a repository of there knowlege and their exsistance and the free exchange of ideas to find solutions. This gives me great comfort in knowing that my exsistance on earth my be brief by my thoughts and ideas can live on forever. The one king that all other kings bow to is the king of knowlege.

I heard about Open Scource Egology on CBC radio. I have been a student of machine Tool History for a while. I like to build things I guess I always have. Right now I am most interested in:

Multi-Machine Lathe Platforms.

My Definition of a lathe:

1. A spindle that runs in a perfect circle when taking a finish cut

2. A bed that has perdictable mis-alignment (Hopfully taper big a the chuck)

3. Fuction as a vertical and horizontal lathe.

4. Highly portable

5. Easy to operate for extended periods.

Multi-Machine Development Plan

Build a high torque low RPM multi- machine out of a diesel V-8 engine block. The engine will be mounted in the inverted position. The oil pan up and the heads down The main crank hole will become the spindle bore and the bedway rails will attach to the cyclinder heads of the engine. The main journal holes will be fitted with a flangled brass bushing. The shaft will be fitted with shaft collors for distributing the thrust load to all the journals. The oil pan being upward allows for easy access to the bushings and shaft collars and easy removal of the spindle shaft. The spindle can be replaced by a line boring bar that can be fitted with spade drill attachments

Accessories

Power hacksaw.

Line boring and large hole drilling.

Hexing Mill for making nuts and bolts.

Thread tapping machine for making valve bodies and threading nuts.

Rapid Pipe Threading Head for making bolts and threaded rod and threading pipe

Components

1. Spindle Head and Shaft System

2. Bed Rail System

3. X and Y Travel systems

4. Spindle drive system

5. Ridgid Pipe Threading Head

6. Skid Frame

7. Hydraulic power generation system.

Development

50% complete

Build a high torque low RPM lathe that is portable, powered by hydraulics.Constructed from a Diesel V-8 engine block complete with cyclinder heads and the bedway and base made from railway ties. That can fuctioning as a vertical or hoizontal lathe simply by standing it on end or laying it down. This is then housed in a 20' shipping container or trailer for portablity. This may be set-up for a varity of machining services.

Prorotype 0% complete

The engine will be mounted in the inverted position. The oil pan will be on top and the dome down. The bedways rails will be attached to the engine block via the cyclinder heads. The design concept is not rigidity but flexability, and ease of calibration. The Crankshaft will be replaced by a straight shaft running on brass bushings attached to the flywheel the key attached to the bore of the flywheel. This is done to ease the removal of the spindle shaft to replace bushings the four main bushings drive key. driven by a hydraulic motor.
