Florida A&M University College of Law Library, Orlando FL
Assistant Director for Public Services July 2007 – present
Manages a staff of seven full-time and five part-time employees. Oversees all public services programs, including interlibrary loan, public access, circulation, and reference. Guest lectures in Legal Research and Writing classes, as well as substantive law classes. Creates and teaches legal research workshops. Teaches Legal Bibliography class. Liaises with information providers for student, faculty, and librarian training. Responds to faculty research needs and delegates as necessary. Works with acquisitions librarian to select appropriate material for collection, and with circulation librarian to solve collection management problems. Provides reference service to public law library patrons.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Problem Solving: Located factual information on shipping schedules vital in the immigration hearing of a firm client and over a one-month period, searched multiple databases, websites, and conducted phone interviews of shipping personnel to verify client’s claims. Result: client escaped execution in his home country and was offered political asylum in the U.S.

Identified relevant online service and set up tracking of proposed state legislation for multibillion dollar insurance litigation. Result: 80% increase in timeliness and accuracy of information.

Legal Research/Analysis: Conducted four years of research in multiple areas using legal expertise, including insurance, health care, natural resources, government contracting, and corporate, and utilized cross-platform search techniques to obtain accurate, timely information.

Teamed with members of antitrust practice group to build customized tracking system for new litigation and news articles, facilitating business development. Result: expanded firm's exposure to international client base and increased firm's competitive edge.

Training/Coaching: Designed and taught in-depth workshop in legislative intent research for first-year law students. Result: students who attended all sessions scored highest in their classes on their first-year briefs.

Designed and taught semester-long workshop series on all aspects of legal research and information literacy, including regulatory research, state-specific resources, and practice materials. Result: Project still ongoing.

WHY are you motivated to support/develop this work?

  • Do you endorse open source culture?

I certainly do! My only concern is that those who participate in open source be able to make a living somehow. Until we have a sharing economy, those working on open source technologies will be taken advantage of by the consumer. (Of course, if the person doing the work is fine with that, then who am I to say them nay?)

  • Why are you interested in collaborating with us?

I firmly believe that the GVCS will allow us to participate in a tribal community culture, strengthening ties between people and going beyond the nuclear family as a societal unit. I also fervently hope for a sustainable future without regressing to an entirely subsistence level.

  • How do you think that the GVCS can address pressing world issues?

The GVCS can provide communities worldwide with the tools needed to support a medium-tech first world lifestyle, while making this lifestyle sustainable.

  • What should happen so that you become more involved with the project?

I would like to help with the legal and administrative side. I have incorporated one 501(c)(3) organization, and would like to assist OSE in incorporation and in corporate management. (Not corporate in the negative sense-- just in running the project within the parameters of US law.)

  • What are you missing in the project?

I don't have enough experience with building and prototyping to tell if anything is missing.

  • What are your suggestions for improvement of the project?

Again, I'm not experienced enough to offer ideas.

  • How are you interested in contributing to the work of GVCS development?

I would like to assist in incorporating the non-profit organization, and provide any other legal or organizational help that I can.

  • Can you volunteer to work with us, and if so, how many hours per week?

Hours will vary, but I certainly am volunteering my time.

  • Are you interested in working with us for pay? If so, what services can you offer, and what is your hourly or per-project rate?

No, I wish to offer my services on a volunteer basis only. This is my contribution to open source.

I would love to visit the project, but I do not have enough leave from my day job to spend a month at the site. In addition, I'm not sure how much I could contribute onsite beyond unskilled labor.

  • Are you interested in purchasing equipment from us to help bootstrap development?

I'm not in a financial position to do that at this time.

  • Are you interested in bidding for consulting/design/prototyping work?

No

I am indeed!

  • Would you like to see yourself working with us on a full-time basis?

No. My skills are not required on a full-time basis.

  • Are you interested in using the technologies that we are developing directly?

Yes! It's my hope that once the GVCS is fully developed, and we are able to acquire the necessary land, my team and I will be able to use the plans to create our own village.

  • Are you interested in being part of the world's first, open source, resilient community? The GVCS is the preparatory step for the OSE Village Experiment - a 2 year, immersion experiment (2013-2014) for testing whether a real, thriving, modern-day prototype community of 200 people can be built on 200 acres using local resources and open access to information? We are looking for approximately 200 people to fill a diverse array of roles, according to the Social Contract that is being developed. This may be the boldest social experiment on earth - a pioneering community whose goal is to extend the index of possibilities regarding harmonious existence of humans, ecology, and technology - as a beacon of light to benefit of all people on Earth.

I am not sure I could do this and still meet my financial obligations. I'm also not sure that my skillset would be needed. If I could, I would absolutely love to.
