Units

On site at FeF, the prototypes are being fabricated with imperial units and sizes. As such the initial CAD for the products developed mainly here will be done in imperial. Down the road with later designs the transition to metric should happen as that is the near-global standard. Designs must be carefully reviewed as pure mathematical conversions from standard to metric will not yield designs that are able to be fabricated properly as material sizes and shapes vary between the two systems.

However with a little time and effort all designs should be able to be converted to metric. Ideally, once a design is finalized we should be able to produce two, slightly different versions of it with one for each system. Then when starting a village somewhere you can choose to build all of one or the other, depending on what tools/parts are more readily available in that area.

Title Blocks

Standardized Building Materials

In order to facilitate modular designs and make it easier for growing communities to bootstrap their development, we should try to develop a minimal list of "building blocks" out of which to build larger machines. Although different mechanical systems require differently sized components, we don't need continuous variation in every property. By limiting the number pieces we use in the machines we gain several advantages: sourcing parts is easier, buying more of fewer parts will likely get us better prices on parts, communities require fewer tools to be fully bootstrapped if there are fewer parts that need manufacturing processes. In addition to these benefits it would be nice for the project as a whole to have a good list of what everything costs to allow for easy cost calculations of different design choices.
