Because it contains graphite flakes, gray iron has greater machinability than ductile iron. It is strong, wear resistant, and known for its vibration-damping qualities. Often used in dies, molds, and automotive applications. Material can be heat treated to a maximum attainable hardness of Rockwell C50.
