Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation
Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation - it is about autonomy that promotes mastery consistent with higher purpose.
In Industry
In industrial or compliance settings, intrinsic motivation means that the agent will exceed requirements or specifications if appropriate. This builds trust in the agent as a respected entity who follows the benefit of the world as opposed to mere legal requirement. This does not mean that legal requirements are followed blindly, because those shall be questioned as well if they are not appropriate.
