A core working assumption of OSE is that it is more fruitful to be a polyglot and generalist when it comes to being an effective innovator in society. 'Effective' is defined as having the most positive effect on the environmental, social, and technical evolution of society.

In the digital age, new possibilities for being a generalist emerge: access barriers to knowledge and experience are lower than ever before in history.
