Concept
The solar breeder concept is a regenerative industrial model in which renewable energy infrastructure—beginning with photovoltaics—is used to manufacture additional renewable energy infrastructure, creating a self-propagating energy system that progressively replaces fossil fuel dependence. Because modern photovoltaics repay the energy required for their manufacture within a small fraction of their operating lifetime, existing solar arrays can power the mining, refining, manufacturing, recycling, and deployment of future solar arrays, along with associated systems such as batteries, hydrogen production, electrified industry, and transportation. Over time, this creates an industrial civilization powered increasingly by ongoing solar energy flow rather than finite geological carbon stocks, enabling new human and industrial activity to operate on renewable energy while driving net carbon emissions toward near-zero.
