I just sent an email, and am posting here to check if you got an email by Alejandro Andreu, (i think they also did a wiki account request)

(Also for future notice i guess, what is the best way to contact you? I know i tend to mainly check my "work" email when at my desk, but otherwise don't see it as much, but check discord mobile more, so that tends to be a better way to reach me when i am not at my desk)

I sent you an email (and am making this post) to check that you got an email from on how they want to make the Lyman Extruder for a University Project?

--Eric (talk) 00:00, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Did you get my email on Cako's questions on the Lyman Extruder ?

Jelou, just a quick note: on the welcome message 'To join OSE full time - we are offering our first ever Immersion Program in 2008. Marcin (talk) 20:10, 24 May 2019 (UTC)' I believe the year should be 2018.

Hoping on contributing more meaningful things shortly. Macarti.

Hey Marcin, just wondering if there was a meeting today or if that got moved due to the long weekend? (and I'm not sure if yu have been getting my emails but it may be an issue on my end (so I didn't want to send another) ) Anywho I may be able to tune in since school is kind of dying down with summer approaching.

Re:Welcome to Open Source Ecology!

Hi Marcin. First of all, congratulation for your huge work and hank you for accepting and welcoming me!

Because of my chemical engineering background, I would like to collaborate for the description and design of some equipment. At this regard, I started a discussion in Talk:Heat_Exchanger.

Please let me know your opinion. --Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 02:05, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Cad drawings

Marcin, I have just learned how to use BRL-CAD and can make CAD drawings full time for the near future. I made a 'first draft' of a design for the Well-drilling Rig and would like to work on either a preliminary design for another of the machines or make drawings of something like the tractor bucket or backhoe, etc. I want to work on something else in the next few days to weeks so that the community has time to comment on the well-drilling rig and after that time I can go back and make any revisions to that that the community comes up with. I would like to know what the most important item is that is not already being worked on by someone else. I had read that someone is working on CAD files for the tractor and that the torch table is cutting some of the pieces for it so that sounds like it is covered, does the liberator have CAD drawings, or are there things that need formal CAD drawings (rather than just blender mockups). -Andrew Buck 08:44, 18 May 2011 (PDT)

Andrew - i added you to the CAD team. We have a number of people - and after the production run, we aim to leverage all this assistance to generate CAD for about 20 other devices - in which we'll need all the help we can get. We plan on then prototyping Sep 1-30 in the Factor e Farm Convergence (to be blogged). Spread the word on the forums, and let's keep building our CAD team - Marcin
I will do the survey and add myself to the relevant CAD team (thank you for pointing me to the CAD team by the way, I hadn't found it on the help pages). I would like to know what to be working on right now though. Of the 20 devices you plan to build in the next phase I would assume very few, if any have formal drawings made. Is there a place where the list is up that I can see what the 20 machines are, and are there some that you and the others on the farm think are particularly important to the next phase. I plan on doing this full time for the next few weeks and if I have to spend 3 days waiting around on forum replies, etc, it is 3 days I can't do anything productive. I plan to do the loader bucket, universal rotor (which I will try to make work with my well drilling rig), and the backhoe. If these sound good that's what I will do, but if there is something else needed for the next phase I would focus on that instead. Also, do you work in standard inches feet, etc in the shop or do you use meters, cm etc, or a mix of the two. The well drilling rig uses some of both systems as I wasn't sure what you typically worked with but if I know the preferred system it is easier to do that right from the get go. -Andrew Buck 09:14, 18 May 2011 (PDT)
I have added renderings of a couple of the models I finished so far. I have models for the Universal Rotor and the Backhoe. I have added a PNG version of a 2d sketch of the rotor (the wiki won't let me upload SVG files), if you or someone else on the farm there could add dimensions to it as indicated in the note that would be cool. The dimensions it has now should be reasonably close to the one you have there but it would be nice to have an accurate model for discussion of changes to be made before the next prototype. I plan to keep modeling, but am running out of ideas of things to work on until I do the second drafts of these models, any suggestions on where to go next would be appreciated. -Andrew Buck 22:09, 19 May 2011 (PDT)

Winga style wind turbine

Dear Marcin and Team,

Have you researched the design possibilities of a Winga style wind turbine?

Here is a link.

http://OrganoWorld.com

These guys are totally open for collaboration. All they want are working prototypes and that next-generation wind-turbines get established around the world.

If efficiencies are as they claim from wind-tunnel tests, this could be fantastic, and could replace the old 3 bladed design and strengthen the Global Village Construction Set!

I've spoken by phone with Fred Churchill in Canada and met several times with Volker Thomsen here in Germany, so mention my name if you want.

All best wishes, Clinton Callahan

joining the 2-year replication training immersion program

Hi Marcin,

My name is Hans Rippel & I am interested in being part of the "2-year replication training immersion program" that is supposed to start in 2017. Please let me know what I can do to become apart of it.

I'm currently living in Brazil but I'm from Europe (Austria/Hungary) and completely focused on sustainability and I am globally minded due to having lived on 4 continents & visited over 40 countries.

A few years back I've co-started a project in Hungary that focus on helping small farmers to become more sustainable, formerly I have studied psychology with a focus on positive psychology, worked as a health coach to combine the science of nutrition with positive psychology, my brother is studying sustainable farming in Switzerland and I am helping him start a local farmers CO2 reduction program, and in the mean time I am looking to start local sustainable projects here in Brazil.

I hope I can become a part of OSE's immersion program.

kind regards, Hans

Rapid Prototyping Crash Training

Hey Marcin, noticed my name is mentioned on Rapid_Prototyping_Crash_Training.

  • I notice my name was down for "How to design and build them in Sketchup"
  • Do you want me to make some content for that?
    • If so just outline / list what you want me to cover and format (screenshare / notes / instructable...etc).

Thanks.

Marcin - would like to introduce you to College of the Atlantic

Hello Marcin-

My name is Darron Collins, I am the President of and an alumnus of the College of the Atlantic (www.coa.edu). I never intended on becoming a college president and don't think I fit the mold of such a position, but I'm good at my job because I've always loved this place and love it now more than ever. Somehow, I think you'd love it too and would find yourself right at home.

I'd like to find a way to get you here for a visit because I believe our campus could very well become something of a laboratory for Open Source Ecology. I know you already have such a lab in your Factor e Farm, but I thought you might like to consider partnering with an experimental college as a way of further testing your ideas. We're just 350 students and 40 faculty, have no departments, offer just one interdisciplinary major in human ecology, and have our campus on the ocean at Mount Desert Island, Maine, complete with two 100+ acre farms.

I'm guessing you have a lot on your plate, especially around the holidays. But if you could drop me an email at dcollins@coa.edu or, better yet, call me at 207-266-5161, I'd really like to talk with you.

Something to consider: would you ever give a commencement address at graduation? Ours is Saturday, June 7 2014. Just an idea ...

Please be in touch-

Darron

Activate Extended wiki formatting capabilities

Hello, I am a newly signed up user and have been sort of cleaning up the wiki of things like Special:Brokenredirects and such. I noticed that your wiki doesn't utilize a very nice bundled in extension (since Mediawiki 1.18) called Extension:WikiEditor. I was hoping a wiki admin could enable it to show it's usefulness. Especially its ability to seamlessly preview a page (instead of needing to reload a page each time). Thanks Kunda (talk)

FYI all that needs to be done is add the string below to the bottom of LocalSettings.php

require_once __DIR__ . "/extensions/WikiEditor/WikiEditor.php";

This looks very cool! it would be good to implement. Andrew (talk)

Ecuadorian Project

Dear Marcin,

As you should know because of my emails and after our skype meeting, there is a genuine interest from the Ecuadorian National Secretariat for Science & Tech to support the local development of OSE machinery. We even have our scenario, have included the translation of the GVCS in our budget, we have asked you to apply through our Prometeo Program. There is a rural community very interested in the project, we are in contact with the major, he said that there is a lot of young people waiting to hear the good news.

Could you please take some minutes of your time to give us an update on how things are developing. Not to count you in is a completely different scenario for the development of the project and we need to arrive at a decision soon enough. Would you please answer my email.

--jorgeandr3s (talk) 22:20, 1 August 2014 (CEST)

PS: We also read with interest your global expansion initiative, in 3rd world countries it might be a good idea to split the responsability of the Construction Manager in two people since most of the education on management is given through formal training but most of the training in construction is given as informal education (learning by doing it).

You can read the spanish translation for the PR here.

Small Steam Engine

I got your mail on the Small Steam Engine / valve controllers. I have no experience with this. I'm not sure what the point of the project is either. If it is for power production from heated water, is it not better to use a Turbine or a (low temperature differential) Open_Source_Stirling_Engine (rhombic drives are more simple, see Volo One) as these are more efficient ? Perhaps also take a look at the simple solar tracker made by George Plhak

Robotic Grillo walk-behind tractor

Perhaps it is possible to make an implement for the Grillo walk-behind tractor to give it one or 2 extra wheels, and automate the whole tractor ? The PTO shaft can either be extended or the extra wheels and robotic control can be made to attach after the implements. Not sure what software can be used to control the agricultural robot, perhaps ROS ? OS combined cycle (talk) 16:36, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Alternative to aquaponics system

Hey, Perhaps you saw the Vertical farming page I made in which I described an A-frame made with gridbeam (or unistrut if not available) with a number of gutters (12 or so) mounted on it, filled with soil and plants (so not hydroponic).

I'm thinking however that perhaps a hydroponic system with separate anaerobic digester would be useful as an alternative to a aquaponics system. Aquaponics allow recycling of waste nutrients (which is an improvement over hydroponics) but the downside is that it is a very fragile system that can break down easily if not continuously monitored and managed. This system would not have that downside.

Not sure how to do it, but possible by using a separate anaerobic digester and pretreating the effluent and perhaps diluting it too, before administering it into the hydroponic system. Methane production is unavoidable and a problem, so perhaps best to burn that and use the waste heat for heating up a greenhouse and using CO2 for injection to the greenhouse (for use by plants).

See here and here. OS combined cycle (talk) 17:39, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

I forget when it was (few years ago?) I was geeking out about aquaponics, and was hearing of various catastrophic feedback loops in aquaponic systems. Main one I heard about was overheating of the water, which then lead to lower dissolved oxygen and everything fell apart.

One solution i came across was sensor and camera based monitoring (some even had internet viewing)

OTS these were VERY expensive, but perhaps some sort of arduino device?

Don't know if i made a page for it yet. I did make a page for a sort of lab venier probe logger type device, perhaps we can use that page?

Either way would that be an option?

SECONDLY

On the whole modular approach of yours that seems good as well

I was plotting some sort of biogas/syngas -> CNG upgrader + compressor system

Supposedly water scrubbing works? so that seems SOMEWHAT simple

Main problem is compressing a flammible gas to high pressure

I know marcin had some sort of pvc pipe storage in the works, was that lower pressure

ANYWAYS that seems like what the best way to send that off would be

For the C02 enriching, that works great, perhaps either a low-NOx burner?

I was trying to find direct methane fuel cells, as that would be wonderful, all seem very experimental as of now

Another way would be to generate co2 in the "Central Burner" area (where the gassifier hydronic heater is) and have either a near pure (ie scrubbed, yet more complex) or concentrated plumbed CO2 line? More complex, but may lead to more co-generation in using the methane. Granted CHP for the greenhouse works great if the area is cold

Also CO2 Sensors would be useful for the whole enriching thing to be able to control the precise levels

Along the lines of effulent and nutrient mixes, how do we go about testing this (sensor wise, not plant growth wise), i know Dissolved Oxygen Sensors, PH sensors, temperature probes are easy, but nutrients etc, what would be needed

I think making a modification of the IBC container WWT system could be used? (Slow sand filter?)

I'm kind of rambling on here, but altogether:

  • Seems like a good idea, and valid concern of "ecosystem?" collapse
  • This would allow for additional modularity perhaps (Fish Module, Anerobic Digester Module, Effluent Processor Module, Nutrient Manifold Module, Greenhouse Monitor Module, etc)
  • Course of action post COVID-19 work perhaps would be:
    • Sensor "Brain Unit" and modular probes etc
    • Biogas->Methane Scrubber
    • More Waste Water Treatment, and Greywater/effulent water reuse tech etc
    • Nutrient "Recepies" and "dosing" devices

I don't know if i got what you were trying to get across, so if i missed something feel free to clarify if need be. Those are my thought on that bit.

--Eric (talk) 19:25, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Hey Eric,

Thanks for the reply. Some responses:

" Main one I heard about was overheating of the water, which then lead to lower dissolved oxygen and everything fell apart. One solution i came across was sensor and camera based monitoring (some even had internet viewing)"

I think the weak point are the fish really. First of all, they're very sensitive to the water (too much of a nutrient and they may die, too little oxygen and they die -the oxygen amounts indeed depend on water temperature-). Once they die, nutrient balance gets distorted. Also, if just eating the fish (the fish are consumed too), there are temporary inbalances.
So the main benefit is that with this system, you actually don't need to use any fish eliminating a major weakness of the aquaponics system.

Also, a benefit over the gutter system with soil which I mentioned is that replacing the soil with other soil with compost in it (after a growing season) is quite labourious, so this modular hydroponics system has that as a benefit. Downside however is that there is a higher cost compared to that so I suggest to keep the whole system as simple as possible (the growers using this aren't professors or experimenters). Also, the system should be constructed using readily available components, found in shops (no custom-designed components, unless just as upgrades, keeping the basic system just composed from readily available hardware store/hydroponics suppliers components).

For CO2 enriching: I was thinking of just piping the entire combustion gas (gas from burnt methane/biogas from the digester) into the greenhouse when no persons are in it (the windows of the greenhouse are opened now and then, so that can occur before any persons enter the greenhouse -harvest season, nurturing, ...- . The burner can also stand in the greenhouse so the waste heat just gets spread into it.
Discard as much automation as possible, effluent can be added to hydroponics system manually.

You don't need to generate power from the methane, so no fuel cells or even combined heat and power systems. No compressor needed either. The power for running the water pump can come from a pv panel

or grid power (corded). For burning the biogas/methane, I was thinking of just a valve and a pilot flame. Could perhaps be done manually too (so just store the biogas until someone comes alone and burns it with a gas lighter). I'm also not entirely sure whether it is worth burning it at all in which case you don't need to foresee this storage option (depends on amounts of biogas/methane that is produced). Also, doesn't it depend on the bacteria in the digester, and are there any ways to influence the bacteria in the digester (by adding a yeast, ... ?)

The thing you really need to examine closely (and probably test in practice) is the effluent treatment device (because if you don't get this right, it can't compete with regular hydroponics systems which use regular nutrient fluid.

Besides the digester/effluent treatment design, there is also the hydroponic system itself. It should be mountable on a an A-frame with 12 pipes (in which a hole is drilled for the plants). For A-frame design, see Vertical Farming page links. I have seen that regular plastic plant pots (with holes, also called net pots) are often used to put inside these pipes and then filled with a substrate (like sand, gravel, vermiculite, perlite, ...). If possible I rather not have it use plastic since I fear it may pass on chemicals into the plants, but I'm not sure whether there are any viable alternatives for plastic (perhaps bamboo may be an option if there is any bamboo that is thick enough and also it then needs to have the sections inside the bamboo removed so the water can flow through). Bioplastic net pots can also be an option (the pipe itself can just be a regular plastic to reduce costs, the net pots are probably the most important here to prevent contamination, if it occurs at all). Perhaps some core components like the pump (which manufacturer ?, ...) can be proposed. Also, I never really used a hydroponics system before, and am worried about root rot. I read somewhere that by having sufficient oxygen in the system this is avoided, but I'm not sure how this is achieved (through an air compressor ?, through incorporating some small waterfalls in the system ?, by putting the roots slightly out of the water, but I doubt roots can take up air when exposed to the air, and probably dry out/die then).

Some commercial pipes/net pots/pumps/... can be found at

  • hydrogarden.com (kits and systems)
