Design for Tolerancing refers to optimizing a design and its fabrication procedure for the least accurate tolerance requirements - in order to simplify fabrication - while retaining all desirable performance features .

This may happen via:

  1. Product redesign
  2. Selection of particular techniques such as match drilling instead of measuring
  3. Addition of precision adjustment mechanisms
  4. Superposition of precision componenents on top of gross structures
  5. Selection of redundant machining operations
  6. Changing the order of assembly to allow for reduced tolerance requirements

and many other techniques.
