Technical

  • Production engineering is developed to allow the build of the production tools solely from scrap plastic, rubber, aluminum, zinc, copper, spring steel wire, and welding wire - reducing material cost outside of electronics and batteries to $5.
  • BOM cost for electronics
  • Startup cost is from 0 to $2000 for all the tooling. 0 cost is via apprenticeship program. $2000 is material cost for microfactory: printer, slow grinder, filament maker.
  • Microfactory kits are available (you can buy a drill, or the production infrastructure for making drills)
  • 3D Printed Linear Bearing-type technology is used
  • Production machine is extensible from 3D printing to milling and CNC torch cutting, and costs under $1500 for the 3D printer, router, mill, and torch
  • Contest pushes open source state of art in 3D printing
  • Rubber-optimized extruder is optimized. This is part of production tooling.
  • Automatic tool change is implemented for the 3D printer.
  • At least 2 materials (2 colors) 3D printing capacity is implemented
  • Printer must be able to do 4 materials total (ABS, rubber, teflon, PEEK or ULTEM)
  • 3D printed gears are
  • Chuck/gear metalcasting is acceptable if production engineering efficiency can be met
  • MIG casting and/or lost PLA casting is developed for simple metal parts while meeting production engineering requirements
  • Filament maker and slow grinder are developed.
  • Efficient 3D printer is enclosed, with bottom-insulated heatbed and insulated heater block. This provides a higher efficiency and capacito to print in lower ambient temperatures down to freezing with good results.
  • Data collected provides a wide range of technical details on every aspect of the printer. Data collection design is extensive for both the machines and the production ergonomics.
  • 24 volt system is used with RAMPS, Raspberry Pi, and quiet drivers

Qualitative

Inspiration, Feelings, Mood Setting

  • Distribution of Hope is visible by the small or nonexistent number of trolls
  • Process of unbridled collaboration is inspirting and eye-opening to participants
  • Incentive structure accomplishes pushing forward technical state of art significantly
  • Large number of(1000+) contributors make substantial technical contributions to the design because they are motivated by the scope and utility of the project

Cultural Change

  • A new possibility of hope is produced regarding the feasibility of collaborative development, and open source economics in general
  • Distributive Enterprise enters the cultural lexicon

Visible Difference

  • Cordless drill industry transitions to lifecycle design as cordless drills are no longer ever thrown out in their entirety. Time frame?
  • Media coverage reaches academic and popular economic literature including Forbes, Time, etc.
  • A visible example of monopoly breakdown creates a cascade of other projects inspired by the example
  • Other groups begin using the OSPD techniques that were proven in the contest - for unleashed collaboration to develop a range of other products
  • Many economic development organizations around the world jump on the possibility of entrepreneurial development and begin producing cordless drills
  • A collaboration protocol and platform is created for continuing product development
  • Hackathons for further product development occur monthly in every major city worldwide
  • First ever example of wide enterprise replication on
  • Monopoly production becomes a minority occurrence in power tools, and is on its way to extinction as economic production returns to communities
  • Large outlets such as Walmart and
  • Gross National Happiness is begins to take hold as a meaningful metric in countries other than Bhutan
  • Conribution of the cordless drill industry to Gross National Happiness increases

Quantitative

Incentive Challenge Preparation Process

  • Leading appropriate technology advocates are recruited as judges and advisors - Hackaday, MOST, Instructables, MAKE, Fablabs, Lulzbot, OSHpark, Element 14, Buildlog, SZOIL, OSHWA, Sparkfun, OBI)
  • Marketing channels are engaged in the development of the incentive challenge
  • Ample funding is secured for proven-technology integration 'stretch goals' such as dual movable extruder, automatic tool change. Prizes are NOT awarded unless earned according to well-defined criteria, and money is allocated to the Post-Challenge Conference instead.

Incentive Challenge

  • "Publish early and often" philosophy is demonstrated with continuous and ongoing uploads, sharing, and remixing of designs on the wiki
  • A minimum of 100 complete entries are submitted (completed entry means a build product, with documented production engineering)
  • Production engineering and quality control is defined for 12 builds per day (outside of continuously 3d printed parts) using a single 3D printer (12" print bed size or larger)
  • Production engineering is defined where in a 30 day period, a minimum of 3 production runs can be made (36 drills produced)

After Unit - Enterprises Started

  • Developer/Producer Conference is held in a major city or at the OSE headquarters.
  • The full production engineering is showcased for the winning model - including full setup of 3D printed organizing infrastructure, machine tools, production line, demo or ordering terminal for online orders
  • Conference is used to market the drills - people can order them from OSE or from others.
  • Upon completion of the incentive challenge, all the entrants (100+) start a part time (or more) enterprise providing cordless drills to one or more of their local stores (within a 1 hour radius)
  • Big Box Store test cases are achieved in several locations
  • Teams of 4 collaborating producers are created to supply each Big Box store
  • Online enterprise infrastructure is created for all producers, with OSE branding possibility. As Emily suggested, Marcin's Freedom Drill etc branding per person.
  • Packaging design is part of the incentive challenge. Packaging case is 3D printed in 2 colors.

Temporal Evolution

  • At end of challenge, a small set of early adopters runs with the enterprise. These early adopters are selected as contest winners or invited guests, and are invited to our Conference.
  • Conference is a one week event - which is a Book Sprint - for a producer training manual.
  • Ground 0 for Distributed Market Substitution is the Conference. It kicks off the development of training for producers to scale the efforts worldwide.
  • Enterprise training is available, both in person and online, for others - as a result of the Producers' Conference.
  • Training program can accept 100 certifications per year in the first year, and 1000 certifications by the second year, and 10k certifications by the third year.
  • Distributed market substitution, or its failure, is achieved by end of year 3.
  • After year 2, we diversify to other OSE Incentive Challenges.

Training

  • Training program follows Regenerative Design principles for building hope. Wo focus on school (future producers) OSE Clubs started in many locations, as well as training for society's outcasts. Thus, we focus on community economic development programs, veterans, prisoners, indigenous peoples, and the elderly.
  • Training program is produced as a result of the Developer/Producer Conference.
  • Training program includes after-school programs - and is a way to add rocket fuel to OSE Enterprise Clubs.

Operational

  • Global cordless drill Distributive Enterprise is financially self-sustaining including for continued product R&D, traning, standards creation.
  • Revenue bootstraps continued development to additional manufacturing infrastructure, as well as to product diversification to all cordlesss tools initially, and eventually to other products and sectors
  • Infrastructure is created for teaching people to start an enterprise
  • OSE develops scalable training and certification infrastructure
  • Product tracking is automated for lifecycle design while maintaining privacy and remaining as open data
  • Low cost microfactory design is provided as open source for ensuring low cost of startup.
  • Startup costs are mitigeted via an onboarding plan that starts with smaller scale or more labor intensive production, until revenue bootstraps further infrastructure.
  • Mentorship and startup assistance program is created to absorb and train any new producer
  • Clear protocols and methods (collaboration architecture, incentive challenge design principles, open source development protocols, collaborative literacy creation) are defined as a result of the OSE Incentive Challenge
  • This OSE Incentive Challenge results in a clear validation of the economic model of the distributive enterprise incentive challenge
  • A dedicated organization is created for running the OSE Incentive Challenge for other products
  • Sound governance is established for the OSE Incentive Challenges organization.

OSE Movement

  • OSE is put on a direct path to OSLO
