A kilogram force is that which would be acted upon, down, by gravity, on a 1 kg weight.

How does it compare to a newton?

One Newton is 0.1 kg force.

There is a useful unit, daN - dekanewton - or 10 Newtons - so that one dekanewton is equal to one kg of force.
