Basics

  • A system, usually conducted by government legislation, in which an extra "Deposit" is added to the cost of something, but returned if a waste product etc is returned
  • Typically done for bottles and cans
  • Since, if all is done according to the terms layed out, the deposit is refunded, the cost to the user is nothing
  • It aims to make the "proper" behavior encouraged
