- When going into end grain, go in at least 2" in. [1]
- General rule - must go in at least half way into thickness of wood, or 3/4" into a 2x piece of lumber
- For shear, use lag screws
- For max strength, go all the way into the wood you have, such as 1.5" into a 2x lumber or 3" into 4x
