Here are the primers from Menards - should I just get a small size of the first 3 oil based ones for testing?
  1. Oil based-
    1. Majic Barricade - $100 for 5 gal - [4]
 Looks good.

    1. Zinsser oil based $135 5 gal[5]
This one doesn't specifically say it blocks wood tannins, so it might not work for the joists.

    1. Conco $120- [8]
Looks good

    1. Zinsser odorless $200 5 gal [6]
This one doesn't specifically say it blocks wood tannins, so it might not work for the joists.

    1. Zinsser cover stain - $170 5 gal [7]
Looks good

  1. Shellac
    1. Is Zinsser Synthetic shellac any good? $218 per 5 gal [10]. Here is a review. [11]
I have already tested this one.The color and texture are awful. And since it's water based it raises the grain of the wood. This is definitely not a good primer for wood.
