Six Most Relevant Starting Points for OSE

Thinker Best entry reason First thing to read or watch
W. Brian Arthur Best bridge from technology evolution to open industrial ecosystems Search SFI for talks on technological evolution
Geoffrey West Best for scaling laws of infrastructure, cities, firms, and growth constraints Read/watch SFI material on cities, scaling, and sustainability
Luís Bettencourt Best for settlements, urban form, infrastructure, and human development Read/watch SFI material on cities and informal settlements
David Krakauer Best for collective intelligence and civilization as a knowledge-processing system Read/watch SFI material on intelligence, culture, and collective systems
Chris Kempes Best for metabolic and regulatory analogies across organisms, firms, and cities Search SFI talks on scaling and regulation
Melanie Mitchell Best for AI realism, abstraction, and limits of machine intelligence in design work Start with SFI talks/interviews on AI and complexity

Best Subclusters for OSE Collaboration

Cluster People Why this matters to OSE
Complexity economics Arthur, Beinhocker, Farmer, Bowles, Peters, Hausmann Needed for modeling open production, abundance economics, and post-scarcity transition logic
Cities, settlements, infrastructure West, Bettencourt, Ortman, Kohler, Hamilton, Meyers Needed for eco-villages, housing systems, distributed settlement design, and infrastructure scaling
Collective intelligence and collaboration Krakauer, Page, DeDeo, Flack, Galesic, Jackson Needed for swarm design, collaborative literacy, and large-group engineering
Network science and robustness Newman, Girvan, Dodds, Larremore, Saavedra, Forrest Needed for resilient organizations, supply webs, and distributed manufacturing networks
Institutional and governance design Bednar, Bowles, Sethi, Hammond, Powell Needed for open-source governance, incentive design, and anti-fragile collaboration structures
Energy and transition systems Kiesling, Trancik, Farmer, Schrag Needed for open energy infrastructure, transition planning, and techno-economic realism

Meta-observation

Santa Fe Institute is strongest for OSE where OSE needs formal models of emergence, coordination, scaling, and transition. It is weaker where OSE needs hands-on fabrication, open hardware design, manufacturing workflows, and real build execution. Therefore, the best relationship is probably not "OSE joins SFI and becomes academic," but rather "OSE becomes the experimental civilization lab and SFI becomes a high-level theory, modeling, and advisory partner."
