Basics
- An OSLT / Appropriate Materials type approach to Water Filtration
- Essentially a bag made of Tightly Woven Canvas (Typically something like Cotton that is cellulosic and porous) that filters MOST particles out of water
- Probably not good enough compared to Microfiltration / Nanofiltration via Hollow Fiber Membrane based solutions like Lifestraw / Portable Water Filtration Pumps (such as those made by MSR etc)
- If combined with Boiling (Essentially 100c Based Pasteurization , Modified Procedures like Tyndallization , and Autoclaving can be more effective against more durable pathogens/products such as spores), it can make safe water from a comparatively simple process
COTS Options
Forest Fundamentals
- An Amazon Listing for the Product ( ‘’’~19 USD Each as of This Edit’’’ )
- Has Printed Directions + a Max Fill Line on the Bag
- Comes with a Stuff Sack
- Mentions:
- ” The Second Edition Millbank Bag: Now featuring taped seams and double overlock stitching, we've significantly enhanced its durability to reduce leakage. The waterproof carrying bags have been upgraded with reinforced stitching for added strength.”
- ”thicker 12oz Unbleached Cotton Canvas ”
- 550 Cord + A Carabiner + Grommet for Hanging
- Mentions it being some sort of sUrViVaL cOrD that can be repurposed as a Fire Wick (Firestarter) , but if you are at the point you are burning your gear to get by…you have some issues, so this seems largely a gimmick
- Uncertain if the grommet is Stainless, but not hard to swap out if need be
Helicon Tex
- An Amazon Listing for the Product ( ‘’’~16 USD as of this Edit’’’ )
- Less information, and potentially a plastic grommet, but otherwise largely the same thing
- Instructions are printed on the stuff sack, not the millbank bag itself for better or for worse
Usual Flow Rate
- In terms of planning, per each bag how much water per minute/hour etc?
