To assess a Build Time of a machine, product, or system - one needs to sum of several steps. This assumes that product design, BOM, and production engineering is already documented. To assess build time, one needs to be able to document:

  • Number of people doing the build
  • Number of machines/products being built
  • Condition of satisfaction for a complete build
  • Build
  • Testing
  • Calibrating
  • Time that it takes to source all materials
  • ordering
  • shipping
  • pickup
  • receiving
  • legalities
  • financial overhead
  • other
  • Time it takes to prepare:
  • Workshop space preparation
  • Tool preparation or securing tools
  • Unpacking tools and materials
  • Distributing tools and materials to work stations
  • Time it takes to build:
  • Cut list: precutting to length, drilling etc.
  • Parts manufacturing - milling, cutting, welding, etc.
  • Assembly - Module 1
  • Assembly - Module 2
  • ... Module n
  • Module quality control/testing/calibration - module 1-n
  • Final assembly
  • Time it takes to finish:
  • Final cleanup, buffing, painting, grinding
