A possible expirement would be replacing the heart of a lab rat/mouse with a check valve of a similar size and seeing if the rat/mouse survives.  Given how questionable the heart as a non pummp valve hypothesis is, I think that would be a waste of time (and the life of said rat/mouse).

Then what is the cardiac muscle for, also why have 4 valves and not 1 in the heart then? Seems questionable at best.
