Usage

  • Seed Eco-Home 2 - we used white butyl tape and then black tape. Is the black tape also butyl or is it asphalt tape? [1]. The black variety appears to be asphalt tape. [2]

For a 32' x 16 house with 4'x8' Sheathing

  • 2.5 sheets high
  • Perimeter of 100' - 26 seams x20' = 520 feet of vertical seam, 200' of horizontal seam for 720' of total seam
  • Add interior of another 720' = 1440' of seam
  • For roof - 700 ft
  • 2140 ft of seam

About

  • Taping seams is always a good idea - [3]. Some tapes listed. First one is 50 cents/foot.
  • Acrylic or butyl (rubber) adhesive does not end up drying or cracking. Acrylic has peak performance, then butyl [4]. Asphalt is for poor people.
  • $12, 167' [5]
  • $11, 164' [6]
  • $12.50, Kimberly Clark [7]
  • 3M™ Grid Air Sealing Tape 8068-NL, 4 in x 75 ft, 8 rolls per case - [8]

By Lifetime

Acrylic

  • Check.pngCheck.pngCheck.png7 cent - for 2" wide 6.8 mil aluminized scrim. 4+ lb/in adhesion. Duct sealing standard. Higher adhesion than 3M tape. [9]
  • Check.pngCheck.pngRed tape at Menards is also acrylic, but 2.7 mil thick. The choice above seems better based on thickness.
  • Check.png3M 8067 -LEED standard, 10 mil, 25 cent - 4x as expensive for 1.4x the performance of the above [10]
  • Check.pngPolyken - 20 cents, 3", 6 mil [11]
  • Check.pngCheck.pngCheck.png4 cent 5 mil greenhouse tape but 50F application (solvent free, water based acrylic) [12]. This is 5 mil thick, whereas packing tape is 3 mil and economy packing tape is 1.6 mil [13]. The greenhouse tape has 1/2 the adhesion strength, but how is its conformity to OSB siding? Aluminized scrim had a hard time conforming to irregularity.
  • Check.pngPacking tape is 1.2 cents - cheap - 2.6 mil and 31 lb per inch longitudinal strength. [14]. But appears to work starting at 14F, whereas greenhouse tape is -40F. [15] on amazon is 1.3 cents.
  • 10 cent 5.5 mil but 50F application temp? [16]
  • Aluminum 10 cents per 2" 3.6 mil [17]
  • Air Sealing Tape 8068. 10 mil - 25 cents - [18]
