Area required is only 0.1% of available land area of earth (0.4M vs 196M total square km of earth area shown in the graphic below).
Cities already cover 3% area. Covering 1/30th of the area of cities with PV generation could provide all the energy. Need to multiply that by 4, since the sun shines 6 hours per day on average.
