Seems like you might be able to get some nice synergy out of the tower structure necessary for a solar concentrator and the tower structure necessary for radio-based communication. It might just be a matter of bolting the radio hardware on to a pre-existing solar concentrator design. I'm curious to see the business plan. Individuals participating in an information sharing network is one thing, because the data transfer rarely increases their cost. But individuals participating in relaying the EM itself seems less attractive since each person would be responsible for the electricity necessary to transmit. | Seems like you might be able to get some nice synergy out of the tower structure necessary for a solar concentrator and the tower structure necessary for radio-based communication. Just found this earlier today, and thought it might apply:
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~nrs32/pubs/hotnets6.pdf Nishanth Sastry, Karen Sollins, Jon Crowcroft: "Architecting Citywide Ubiquitous Wi-Fi Access". The Sixth Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets-VI).
Of course http://fon.com is also very relevant.
Participation
While I'm not exactly sure what I have to offer at this point, I would like to be involved in this project. At the very least I'll follow along here. Are there email exchanges that I might be be included in (if of course you're interested :-).
See my addition to the heading 'Related existing data or facts that support theory'.

- Matt_Maier 25MAR2012
