Basics

  • From their Wikipedia Page:

"Boston Dynamics is an American engineering and robotics design company founded in 1992 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, Boston Dynamics is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group.

Boston Dynamics is best known for the development of BigDog, a quadruped robot designed for the U.S. military with funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA),[1][2] and DI-Guy, software for realistic human simulation. Early in the company's history, it worked with the American Systems Corporation under a contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to replace naval training videos for aircraft launch operations with interactive 3D computer simulations featuring DI-Guy characters.[3] The company is a pioneer in the field of robotics and it is one of the most advanced in its domain.[4][5][6][7] Marc Raibert is the company's president and project manager. He spun the company off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992.[citation needed]"\

  • Makes some of the best leg based mobile robots

Designs

Big Dog (Robot)

  • A Quadroped that is so stable (due mainly to active software based stabalization) it can walk on ice, and/or be kicked, and/or walk on rough terrain
  • Was evaluated by the US military as a cargo transport that could handle rough terrain as LS3 (Robot)
  • Powered by an onboard generator

Sandflea (Robot)

  • Essentially a roboic car with a rear pogo stick like piston for jumping\
  • Can jump over fences, walls, and stairs etc

[[WildCat (Robot)

  • One of the fastest Quadroped Robots
  • Uses a galloping gait
  • Somewhat sililar to Big Dog and LS3

Spot (Robot)

  • A quadroped with a robotic arm for tools, and interactions such as opening doors
  • Spot Mini is capable of autonomous, preprogrammed, and remote control

Handle (Robot)

Atlas (Robot)

  • Probably the most agile biped robot
  • Can do full on backflips and gymnastics
  • Intended to be a direct swap in for humans but far more durable
  • Could do things like nuclear powerplant work, industrial work (adjust manual valves etc), and many more applications
  • A Viddeo Highlighting Atlas's Agility
