Design for Tolerancing refers to optimizing a design and its fabrication procedure for the least accurate tolerance requirements - in order to simplify fabrication - while retaining all desirable performance features .
This may happen via:
- Product redesign
- Selection of particular techniques such as match drilling instead of measuring
- Addition of precision adjustment mechanisms
- Superposition of precision componenents on top of gross structures
- Selection of redundant machining operations
- Changing the order of assembly to allow for reduced tolerance requirements
and many other techniques.
