Originally 28 years, then 48 years, then 56 years, then the lifetime of the original creator + 50 years, then the lifetime of the original creator + 70 years
Problamatic as it is not in the intrest of big companies and publishers to reduce this, in fact it is in their intrest to increase it
1998 mickey mouse ALMOST entered public domain (they then lobbied the USA legislative branch and passed the Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998 )
As stated in This Article , Assuming no further bills are passed by the USA government: On January 1, 2024, we'll see the expiration of the copyright for Steamboat Willie—and with it Disney's claim to the film's star, Mickey Mouse. The copyrights to Superman, Batman, Disney's Snow White, and early Looney Tunes characters will all fall into the public domain between 2031 and 2035.
- So either we may finally start "catching up" , OR there will simply be another run of lobbying and a new law
