Basic Design

  • 6" wide by 1/4" u-channel frame
  • Gear rack drive, 20 degree gear rack, 1/2" wide, 20 pitch (20 teeth per inch)
  • 1" pinion gear, rides directly on rack
  • z-axis of torch has manual adjustment
  • Sacrificial slats may be used, or another workpiece table
  • 495 in oz Stepper Motors from xylotex, 1/4" shafts
    • About 31 in lb torque, or 1 G acceleration for a 60 pound gantry with 1" diameter driver gear
  • Gantry weight - about 90 lb, see below
