Technology. The substance of modern civilization. The foundation for future innovation.

See Development Guide for information on the development process.

Technical Scope

The time is 2013. The centre is Factor e Farm.

Our current technological capacity is basic software, basic biological, basic electronics, basic mechanical, and basic hydraulics.

Consider organization, maintenance, inventory. They are the development infrastructure that can significantly reduce development time and risk.

The CNC Circuit Mill enables complex circuit production - the key to advanced electronics. Inverter, Welder, Power Supply

The CNC Torch Table, CNC Mill, and CNC Lathe enable advanced mechanical production.

A solid software development platform enables advanced software.

Advanced electrical and mechanical capacities enable deeper technologies.

The Induction Furnace enables material heating for hardening, forming, rolling, and casting a wide variety of substances.

Advanced software and electromechanical instruments enable basic chemical, advanced biological and advanced hydraulic production, as well as advanced monitoring systems. Synthetic Fluids

Greater collaboration and networking results in greater material sourcing options, paving the way for advanced chemistry and material compositing.

Advanced chemistry and material compositing enable basic optics and basic lithography.

The tech capacity at that time enables basic semiconductor electronics. Computer

Scaling the tech capacity enables basic megamachines.

We are then on the frontier of society's technological state.

Cutting-edge innovation fields include:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Nanotechnology
  • Metamaterials
  • Bioengineering
  • Space Systems
  • Geoengineering
  • Quantum Systems

Collaborative Scope

While technical development is occurring, individuals and organizations around the world should have an accessible way to collaborate on development, through active project particiption or peer review. Additionally, our documentation should be good enough for others to begin commercial enterprises with which they can generate income to sustain themselves and contribute towards open development. Commerce documentation is key for enterprises to perform marketing, advertising, sales, and support- all the way to the product being received and used by the buyer.

Technical documentation needs to be broad enough to cover the diverse technical challenges associated with productive entrepreneurship. Organization model and legal documentation should also be extensive so that others can avoid social and government conflict. The use of existing online resources is a must for the legal coverage.

Organization, Maintenance, Inventory

Organization

Workshop needs a lot of organization. 100 hours should get it to a much more workable state.

Electronics Zone

  • Organize first aid supplies into case
  • Organize safety equipment
  • Organize electrical supplies and tools
  • Organize non-electrical supplies and tools

Electrical Infrastructure Zone

  • Clear out shelf materials

Large Machine Row

  • Clear out shelf materials
  • Move shelf into position beside wall

Ironworker Zone

  • Move ironworker or punch so that ironworker angle cutting can be extended beyond 1ft.
  • Designate ironworker-dedicated control valve and powercube
  • Designate punch-dedicated control valve and powercube
  • Mount power strip to table for magdrills.
  • Move and mount low-profile vises to table for magdrills
  • Move out broken tools, tools in disrepair, dissimilar materials from area and local shelves
  • Organize hydraulic accessories in local shelves

Torch Table Zone

  • Move table-dedicated plasma cutter to permanent area
  • Move table-dedicated air compressor to permanent area
  • Designate table-dedicated 240VAC and 120VAC outlet.
  • Clear out local shelves
  • Move and organize plasma cutting accessories to local shelves
  • Move and organize air compressor accessories to local shelves

Welding Zone

Coordination Zone

Center Field

  • Label and organize tools into tool drawers
  • Move TIG Welder Accessories to shelves near TIG welding station

Wood Pillars

  • Hang heavy duty extension cords from all pillars

Maintenance

A lot of tools need maintaining.

Hablab air gaps are wreaking havoc on the inside temperature - a few bottles of expanding foam <30$ and <1hr should handle some of the big gaps.

Second mill needs to be fixed, discarded, or replaced.

Lathe needs to get operational.

Surface Grinder needs to get dressed.

Diamond point dressing bit is from J&M Diamond Tool, Single Point Dresser Style B 7/16 X 1-5/8 GP 1/2 ct. Cost is 44.7$

Steel dressing bit holder can be made with 2" x 3" x 6" steel flat with M12x1.75 setscrew. Cost is <20$

A drill press with autocentering vise with organized drill bits and tap set makes this easy. Time is <2 hours.

First mill needs to be lubricated. 3/4" dia collet mounting problem needs to be fixed.

Bandsaw needs cutting fluid refill.

Problematic welders need troubleshooting and repair.

Inventory

Metric Stock of Fasteners needs to be ordered and organized.

Stainless Steel Set with Case. Cost is 169.95 + shipping

Stock of hydraulic hoses and fittings needs ordering and organizing.

Stock of electronic components needs ordering and organizing.

Tools

Steel tables, MIG Welder, TIG Welder. Hot welding is excellent for strong, permanent, non-precision assemblies.

Need for acquisition: robust, reliable drill press with 1/2" or larger chuck and installed with autocentering vise; chuck key attached to drill press with chain or rope. Time savings: dozens of hours every month relative to having to use the mill for non-precision drilling operations.

Mill drilling example: lower the xy bed, loosen the existing end-effector, install and tighten the drill chuck, loosen the drill chuck, insert and tighten drill bit, mount material on vise, turn on digital readout, zero digital readout on an axis, center the drill bit by reading the DRO, screw down the Z axis limiter, turn mill on and move spindle down.

Auto-center-vise'd Drill Press example: loosen drill bit, insert and tighten drill bit, mount material on vise, turn on drill press and move spindle down.
