Basics
- A Multi-Fuel with Burner Separated Fuel Tank System Stove made by Mountain Safety Research (MSR)
- Can also be run as an Inverted Canister Stove with an included adapter
- Uses different nozzles that must be swapped to operate on different fuels
Temporary Trashcan Section
Warnings etc
- Bit of Alarm Fatigue with the sheer amount of labels/warnings, sheeesh
- GRANTED liability, and any sort of fired heater/burner etc IS inherently risky etc, but yeah
- ANYWHO ones worth noting/looking into:
- ”Never use IsoPro fuel containers larger than 8 ounces (227 grams)”
- This has me thinking it doesn’t have a regulator and/or that would overwhelm the regulator?
- ”In canister fuel mode, stove should not be operated or stored at temperatures below 0f / -18c. In liquid fuel mode with the MSR Arctic Fuel Pump , stove should not be operated or stored at temperatures below -40f / -40c
- I wonder of this is liability, or of it will not function outside of the limits they mentioned
Operation Guidance
- ”Always start stove wirh fuel canister in upright position prevent a large flare up”
- Essentially if trying to do liquid feed, you use vapor feed to preheat the Vapor Generator THEN invert the canister (after 30 seconds they say)
- Then before shutting everything down you flip it BACK once done
Testing by User: Eric
- About 1Min 45 secs to 2 Minutes for a rolling boil from a Coleman brand propane-butane blend
- Granted borderline at sea level and this was without the wind guard up
- Bit more flame with the cylinder inverted, although it was a bit unstable
- The hose is still pretty new/stiff, and it all may need more fiddling to be SURE, but too large of canisters may not rest in inverted mode well
3/23/26
- Swapped from UC to UG (canister fuel nozzle to gasoline / white gas nozzle )
- In doing so one also swaps from the canister adapter to the liquid fuel adapter+bottle
- As per the written instructions, i used a bit of the pump oil as a release aid/anti seize type lubricant for the attachment point
- The video didn’t mention it, and it’s probably not CRITICAL, but figured it can’t hurt.
- After that setup though it was all fine
- Preheat was the typical inferno, but nothing out of control etc
- Once i turned it on (after preheating) it ran fine, at low throttle it would pulse a bit but was workable
- I used that Heat Exchanger Kettle to boil some water
- I didn’t time it but this was basically a “does whatever gets cooked by it taste like gasoline?” Test before wasting food on it etc
- At least with Coleman Fuel , it didn’t luckily! (although there was at times a smell of unburnt vapor or something in the area around the stove)
- Made some tea with that, then mixed the rest with some cold tap water + added noodles
- At least with Coleman Fuel , it didn’t luckily! (although there was at times a smell of unburnt vapor or something in the area around the stove)
- I didn’t time it but this was basically a “does whatever gets cooked by it taste like gasoline?” Test before wasting food on it etc
- I used that Heat Exchanger Kettle to boil some water
- Then i cooked some noodles as a simmer test
- After boiling them for a bit, getting it to simmer but not ‘’’uncontrolled overflowing rolling boil’’’ WAS a bit finicky, the throttle response isn’t that instant/many degrees of adjustment is needed to get a noticeable difference (unlike the more linear throttle response canister gas)
- Short of me overcooking the hell out of the noodles (NOT al dente lol), they or the sauce etc weren’t scorched which was nice
- A larger pot (such as the trangia system billy can (vs my walmart special fry pan sized mess kit (which to be fair is stainless steel which is nice, and it’s borderline disposable in terms of how attached i am to it/how “nice” it is etc) ) would negate most of the risks of uncontrolled rolling boil too
- The shutdown process is a bit odd
- I turned off the throttle, let the flame die, then let it cool down while i ate
- The bottle still had some fuel in it, despite being the smaller bottle
- I didn’t measure it (using a funnel + accurately seeing the fuel level in the opauque bottle ks a bit difficult, pre-measuring may be worthwhile), but maybe 2/3 or 1/2 full before, and 1/2-1/4 full after?
- More concrete fuel burn rate numbers would be nice
- I didn’t measure it (using a funnel + accurately seeing the fuel level in the opauque bottle ks a bit difficult, pre-measuring may be worthwhile), but maybe 2/3 or 1/2 full before, and 1/2-1/4 full after?
- The instructions/official video weren’t TOO clear on proper shutdown/storage of stuff, but i found a video of someone doing it quite nicely
- Only bit i’m a BIT uncertain on is the hooking the hose to the stove, that may be too short a Bend Radius for the hose/wire inside, but at the same time that may loosen that stiff hose up nicely?
- ALL IN ALL, it worked well and I’m impressed
- Granted a proper Ethanol Free Gasoline or even straight up cheapest E-10 Around test would be neat too
- Short of if the E-10 has O Ring / Plastic Pump Bit Materials Compatibility Issues
- Granted a proper Ethanol Free Gasoline or even straight up cheapest E-10 Around test would be neat too

- Does a pretty thorough comparison + teardown
- Main changes were:
- from Wire Stand to Cut Flat Stock
- Thicker Vapor Generator tubing
- Elastomer rather than Leathet Cup for the Pump
- Folding Wire+Plastic, rather than near flush knurled knob
- Fuel Filter at the end of the pump

- The Primus Himalaya Omni Fuel pump uses Metal for most components, instead of plastic (hence more durable, yet also more expensive+heavy)
- Also as “Mosin-007lv” pointed out in the comments, Primus offers larger 1.5L fuel bottles as well
- A comparison to see which bottle is most Skookum / Overbuilt etc would be nice as well

- They essentially partially disassemble the stove, remove the legs, then insert it into the Trangia
