OSE is one of the leaders in crowd-funding as a funding strategy. Our beginnings were founded on a $1500/month budget obtained via crowd funding - such as Chip-In and True Fans. Inspired by Kevin Kelly's 1000 True Fans concepts, we have begun our True Fans Campaign in January of 2009 and now (2012) have over 500 subscribers - see True Fans. Furthermore:

  • In September 2011, we have successfully collected $20k in 7 days when we needed to begin construction and we were out of funds - [1]
  • In November 2011, we have succeeded in raising $63k gross via Kickstarter.

Since then, we have received the Shuttleworth Fellowship and other grants via the nonprofit sector. However, as a test of the true viability of our work - we will continue to rely on the community of True Fans, and make up the rest of the budget by selling our products. Products will be produced via Collaborative Production Runs
