Basics

  • This page aims to go over Off The Shelf options for Disposable Tableware (Bowls, Cups, Forks, Knifes, Spoons, etc) that are Biodegradable
  • While Zero Waste Philosophy can work in some instances, for Cheap/Portable applications (outside of a Deposit and Return System of high quality tableware (think “bring your own cup” / tumbler refill discounts etc), disposable tableware is needed
  • While Disposable Plastic Tableware is commonplace, and even if not Biodegradable , if made with Sustainable Biomass and/or Renewable Electricity, it can be ‘’’okay’’’ , although the risk of Litter (intentional, or accidental due to wind etc) and Microplastics still remain
  • Ideally this biodegradable tableware would be Prompt Biodegradable

Requirements

  • Biodegradable
    • Optimal is under ambient conditions, near-term may be Anaerobic Digestion or Aerated Static Pile Composting compatible etc, Bioreactor Landfill is loosely related and while imperfect does have Testing Standards (ASTM, Potentially ISO as well (grab the numbers for this)
    • Also NOT only “ Bio-disintegratable (ie non-biodegradable materials with a starch additive so they quickly progress to albeit slightly less impactful Microplastics more quickly)
  • Sustainably Made (Not JUST biodegradable, although this may be harder to achieve/become cost prohibitive, long term though this is a must)
  • Identical in Quality to Plastic Equivalents
    • ie not instantly mushy (uncoated) Paper Straws
    • Also not having the issue of crappy plastic forks that deform upon use etc
