I'm thinking of a minimum version of D3D that costs as little as $150 without heat bed, with all printed parts including self-milled controller and printed belts, pulleys. We can even try for 3D printed bolts for attachment. 3D printed corners, too. And eventually 3D printed steppers, so we start with steel, plastic, copper wire.
