Every new level of complexity both transcends the limitations of the earlier level and includes the less complex structure into itself. Molecules transcend and include atoms; tissues transcend and include molecules; organs transcend and include tissues; physiological systems transcend and include organs; organisms transcend and include systems; relationships transcend and include organisms; ecosystems transcend and include organisms and their environments and so on.
