Basics

  • A Unit of Power often used for engines and motors
  • Was originally used to show steam engines could do the work of work horses
  • Confusing as there is a metric version, an imperial/customary version, and different "load type" versions
  • For the imperial standard "horsepower" (most common?), one mechanical horsepower lifts 550 pounds (250 kg) by 1 foot in 1 second
  • Imperial is also equal to 745.7 watts, which is considered the "official" unit by the EU rather than for marketing purposes
