Why use a 4 wire with ground type of wire?

  1. 2 circuits with one cable!
  2. Less equipment grounding conductors at the breaker box

Advantages

Wow, this is amazing. Turns out 14-2-2 was actually slightly cheaper than 14-3, and only a little more expensive than 14-2. Given it doubles the connection ability, and reduces grounding wiring - this is an amazing find. Essentially: half the cost of your electrical by using it.

Disadvantages

  • Packing volume of electrical boxes and junctions - there are more wires to pack in a box.
