how are larguages best learned?

By sounds, then by structure. Immersion practice, with Google Translate and language packs for offline use [1]. Some have weird letters, and thousands of them such as Kanji, but only 214 primitives [2], etc.

Right now you can use Google Translate, so communicating with a foreigner is no problem.

Now you know 100 languages. Or 1000.
