Basics

  • Redundancy using two or more disimilar technologies, designed such that the system is even more resilient since conditions that impact one system negatively are unlikely to behave with a different technology in the same way.
    • For instance for emergency lighting, having a Battery Powered LED Lantern and a Candle Lantern or Fueled Lantern means that if the batteries fail due to it being too cold, you have the other tech to fall on, rather than two no functioning lanterns etc
    • Another example would be the Starliner Program, where if issues with a single solution with redundant copies (such as the Space Shuttle) came up, the whole fleet had to be grounded until the problems were addressed, with Starliner, another option (either Soyuz or SpaceX Dragon) was used in the meantime
