The Concept Review step assesses the Conceptual Design and Design Rationale for proper direction and leanness. Direction refers to the adaptation of industry standards to OSE Specifications - and assessment of the most well-suited route towards providing a lean yet robust product. Issues to consider are:

  • Which industry standard route is most adaptable to the present needs? How much of the industry standard concept should be retained, and what changes should be made for it to meet criteria of low cost, high performance, design-for-fabrication, modularity, design-for-disassembly, and lifetime design?
  • What material choices should be used?
  • How much custom fabrication is required vs using stock parts?
  • Does fabrication require welding and torching only, or drilling + punching, or machining?
  • What is the estimated time of fabrication?
