RESEARCH:
Trace Metal Analysis on Anguilla rostrata "The American Eel" 2009-Present
Faculty Involvement: Assistant Professor Mark Sullivan and Associate Professor Tait Chirenje
Testing included dissection and digestion of eel samples, and analysis using Varian SpectrAA 240Z Zeeman Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. The goal is to find the baseline metals absorbed in the American Eel from various locations from the New Jersey area. In Association with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Trace Metal Analysis on Atlantic City Soil 2009
Faculty Involvement: Associate Professor Tait Chirenje
Testing included use of the Zeeman 240Z to determine metals present in soil samples from various locations in and around Atlantic City, New Jersey. Baseline testing was intended to understand and quantify the amount of pollutants in the soil.
Underwater Sound Absorption to protect the hearing of orcina orca "Killer Whale" 2009-Present
Faculty Involvement: Assistant Professor Neil J. Arronson
Testing is intended to find techniques for reduction of sound intensity in water. Funding was provided by the Stockton College Board of Trustees from the Fellowship for Distinguished Students Award.
WHY are you motivated to support/develop this work?
- Do you endorse open source culture?
Open source enables evolution. It creates an environment of creative problem solving and increased knowledge. OS challenges users to be a part of their technology and join a community of other users.
- Why are you interested in collaborating with us?
To graduate from my institution, I have to present a senior thesis project, showing how I have used my knowledge and proving my usefulness as a physicist. I'd like to work with OSE to create a tool for the GVCS and use that as my senior thesis.
- How do you think that the GVCS can address pressing world issues?
By creating OS versions of technology which can be created and used by people who aren't affluent enough to afford purchasing commercial versions. Technology has improved the lives of all mankind immensely, and allowing the bottommost members of our community the tools to create technology will improve their lives.
- What should happen so that you become more involved with the project?
I would like to become involved in a project as soon as possible as I have just entered summer vacation.
- What are you missing in the project?
A group to work with, although I have students at my institution to work with.
- What are your suggestions for improvement of the project?
A listing of all the current projects and their completion tables.
WHAT
- List all of your skills in these areas: Communications - Organizational - Computer Support - Finances - Design - Natural Building - Electronics - Automation - Metallurgy - Engineering - Fabrication - Agriculture - Energy - Architecture - Video/Graphics/Art - PR/Marketing - Education - Construction - Industry - CNC - Chemistry - Product Design - Other
Communications and Organization as president of the SPS.
Engineering, design, fabrication and electronics while interning with the US Navy
construction, agriculture and energy -working witht he environmental sciences program at my school in construction of wind sensing arrays and rain gardens.
Education -I assist a professor at my institution in lecturing the largest class taught on my campus and tutor students in my spare time.
- How have you already contributed to the project?
Nothing, but I want to become involved immediately.
HOW can you help?
- How are you interested in contributing to the work of GVCS development?
I'd like to help design and build one of the items from the list of OSE.
- Can you volunteer to work with us, and if so, how many hours per week?
I can work many hours during the summer and winter months, but less in the spring and fall because I have classes.
- Are you interested in working with us for pay? If so, what services can you offer, and what is your hourly or per-project rate?
Getting my degree will be pay enough.
- Are you interested in Dedicated Project Visit?
Yes, if it is in the summer or winter break. I have school otherwise.
- Are you interested in purchasing equipment from us to help bootstrap development?
I might be able to get a stipend from my institution to buy tools and equipment.
- Are you interested in bidding for consulting/design/prototyping work?
- Are you a True Fan? If not, why not?
No, because I have no income at the moment, I go to my institution on scholarship.
- Would you like to see yourself working with us on a full-time basis?
I intend to work on this project as much as is needed to complete it.
- Are you interested in using the technologies that we are developing directly?
No, but I still see the importance of the project.
- Are you interested in being part of the world's first, open source, resilient community? The GVCS is the preparatory step for the OSE Village Experiment - a 2 year, immersion experiment (2013-2014) for testing whether a real, thriving, modern-day prototype community of 200 people can be built on 200 acres using local resources and open access to information? We are looking for approximately 200 people to fill a diverse array of roles, according to the Social Contract that is being developed. This may be the boldest social experiment on earth - a pioneering community whose goal is to extend the index of possibilities regarding harmonious existence of humans, ecology, and technology - as a beacon of light to benefit of all people on Earth.
I might be, I graduate in 2012 and plan on attending graduate school but I haven't selected an institution yet.
