Welcome to the wiki Adam.
Nice to see some figures in the furnace manual - like 3 lbs/hour/kilowatt of furnace power - so if this scales down - 50kW should yield 150 lbs/per hour - or about 8 feet of 1/4"x4" square tubing produced per hour. So that in a 12 hour shift, we can produce enough steel to build a tractor. That would be a very interesting experiment, and I look forward to it.
I think that a 200kW furnace is sufficient to create modern day advanced civilization - which is our end goal. The GVCS calls for around that power level to fuel advanced civilization, the theory being that the highest overall integrated ecoindustrial efficiency is obtained at this very modest scale, and going above that begins to cause various inefficiencies of organization. -MJ
