DPV Interview
This is a basic crank shaft mechanism is an example of some recent work in Catia, a 3d modeling program by Dassault
This is an example of a basic Virtual Instrument I created using LabVIEW, a program developed by National Instruments. This VI demonstrates ability to use both charts and graphs using randomly generated data.
This is an early model I created of the first computer I built, using Google Sketchup
This is another SketchUp model. It is a scale model of our basement home office. The model was used to redesign the layout

How did you hear about the program? Why are you applying for a Dedicated Project Visit? Why are you interested in our work?

I heard about this program through TedTalks like many others. I am applying for a Dedicated Project Visit because I want to see Open Source Ecology succeed. I am interested in Factor E farm because it is actually testing these theories.

Describe practical skills you may have - from agriculture, workshop, industry, organizing, hands-on, CAD, manufacturing, computer skills, etc.

Practical skills I have for this project would include familiarity with basic building and farming tools, such as saws, drills, wrenches etc. Also more advanced tools like table saws, soldering irons, and belt sanders. In addition to my skills with tools, I also have a talent for repairing miscellaneous household devices, such as computers, toasters, washing machines, coffee makers, and plumbing. I have built desktop computers, shelves, desks, and a quarter-pipe ramp for skateboards.

Have you designed and built or produced anything for your own use?

Which of your skills are particularly relevant towards creating the GVCS? Please view the TED Talk and recent update for the latest on our approach and on-the-ground work.

I would say that my Computer, CAD, Mechanical Engineering, Earth building, and Construction skills would be most useful towards creating the GVCS.

Do you have any organizational skills and experience?

I am familiar with Ghantt charts, and use Google Calendar for most of my scheduling. Also, as far as digital organization goes I am a big fan of “tagging”.

Can you cook? Can you cover your food expenses?

I can cook. Raised in an Italian family, I can make a mean spaghetti bolognese, homemade pizza, and having worked at a wine store I can even recommend a good bottle to go with either.

Do you have resources to support yourself while volunteering with us?

I can support my self financially while volunteering at FactorE farm.

Do you have any medical, physical, or psychological conditions or disabilities which may affect your ability to do physical work?

I have no medical conditions.

Do you have any emotional, psychological, or mental conditions which may affect your ability to act with composure and good judgment?

I have no medical conditions.

Are you easy to get along with and can you get along with other people?

I am very easy to get along with.

Do you have strong ideological views (political, religious, elitist, feminist, etc.)?

I am Roman Catholic.

Are you a team player - or someone who understands that the work we do at Factor e Farm is for a much greater purpose than for our own self-gratification, indulgence, or agenda? This implies a level of maturity in the participant which allows one to remain not only aligned with the vision, but also to remain motivated in this work.

Yes, I am a team-player, in fact, I love teamwork and collaboration very much! Although, when I am really being super productive, I tend to be working alone.

Do you smoke?

I do not smoke.

Do you have any dietary restrictions? Will you eat meat raised at our farm?

I have no dietary restrictions. I would eat meat raised on FactorE.

Do you have transportation? Will you be arriving by car and leaving the car on-site?

I have a car, but I will most likley fly from NY to Missouri and request a ride from the airport. Although, a road trip is not out of the question.

Documentation is key to moving our work forward. Are you familiar with using a Wiki?

I am very familiar with online wiki's. I can even offer introductory training in this area.

Please produce a 1-3 minute video introduction to yourself and upload it to a video-sharing site of your choice for our review. See sample video from WilliamCleaver from a former application.

This is the same Intro video as the one above.

Can you work well as a pioneer under rough conditions, by taking the responsibility to create your own environment?

As a pioneer, I think I would work well. I enjoy camping, hiking and backpacking. Also, I have done forest service in Utah and Colorado. If need be I can bring some materials (tarps, sleeping bag, mess kit, etc..) and create my own working environment.

When would you be available for a Dedicated Project Visit?

I would be available from May 19 to Sept 1.

If you are accepted and things don't work out, do you have other options to pursue after the month?

I would be open to changing/refocusing my efforts.

List your goals and deliverables for your Dedicated Project Visit, breaking it up by each of the four weeks. Please write a one-page proposal brief summarizing what you would like to do, how you would accomplish it, and what resources you would need to do so. Include a budget as necessary. We are willing to pay for prototyping materials.

TBD... Some options I see are push forward one of the GVCS tools, (maybe the furnace). Another possibility would be to build a prototype dome, using my experience with Earthbuilding at Cal Earth, to demonstrait the often overlooked positive qualities of advanced earth structures. And yet another possibility would be completing CAD and CAE models.

Are you willing to publish all the results of your work openly, and to make any of your contributions open source, consistent with our goal of creating Distributive Enterprise?

Yes.

How does your proposed work contribute to the creation of the GVCS?

My work would be directly progressing one of the 50 GVCS tools, except for the CEB Dome, which would be adding 1 more tool to the Habitat section of the GVCS.

What are the metrics by which you could assess the success of your work? (prototypes built, documentation produced, resources or funding raised, infrastructure built, food provided, contribution to the community provided, True Fans recruited, etc.) Note that we are looking more for tangible and explicit proposals and results as opposed to 'I will help with whatever is needed' or other generalizations - unless we agree otherwise.

For the dome I could measure completion quantitatively by estimating total amount of bricks needed.

What do you expect personally to get out of your Dedicated Project Visit?

I see this as a great way to exercise my engineering skills. Also, I would be honored to work on this project.

Can you visit us prior to your Dedicated Project Visit?

Possibly.

Please share three interesting things about yourself.

I have hiked part of the Appalachian Trail.
I volunteered in Utah and Colorado in the Forest Service.
I participated in an archeological dig in Italy, where we unearthed medieval pottery.

Please share three things you think people should know about living with you.
