Coaching as a Super-Skill

I spend a lot of my time asking myself this question…

What are the most valuable skills I can learn today?

This question has led me to spend thousands of hours studying mental models and learning how to learn.

The other “super skill” that has changed my life, but that I’ve never talked about is coaching.

I spend hours per week coaching people one-on-one and in groups, and over the last few years, I have coached hundreds of people. Even as we scale the business, I still make sure I’m doing coaching regularly.

Why do I do this?

The best way to learn is to teach and coach others. I call this the Explanation Effect, and I’ve spent over 100 hours researching and writing about this one idea alone.

Coaching is the fundamental skill you need before you launch courses, speeches, speeches, articles, and books. Coaching people helps you refine your thoughts based on what actions people actually take and what results they get. In my experience, a curriculum designed without coaching will likely fail. In other words, coaching gives you an amazing feedback loop on what knowledge is valuable.

Coaching can provide you an incredible, guaranteed income. Also, as you get better at it, you can drastically increase your rate. For example, my hourly coaching rate has increase by 5x in the last 5 years.

Coaching is extremely fulfilling, because you see the progress of your students. I’ve delivered hundreds of keynote talks in 8 countries over the years. But the reality is that the only feedback you get is a few questions and applause. You never see what the audience does with what you shared. Therefore, your left wondering about your impact.
